Read Naturally Live is an online reading program that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. Text and audio guide the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks student progress.

pointer Research basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

Read Naturally Live is a research-based, online reading program

Read Naturally Live Steps
  1. Select a Story
The student clicks on the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.
  2. Key Words
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story. In the Phonics series, the student listens to a phonics lesson and reads words that have the featured phonics patterns.
  3. Prediction
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story.
  4. Cold Timing
The teacher may time the student for one minute as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student clicks unknown words while reading, and then clicks the last word read during the timing. Read Naturally Live subtracts the unknown words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score and displays it on a graph. This step establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  5. Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  6. Practice
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  7. Quiz
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story.
  8. Retell/Word List
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension.
In the Phonics series, the student works on decoding skills by practicing the word list until able to read it accurately at a predetermined rate. The Phonic series also includes a spelling step to give students practice encoding words from the word list.
  9. Pass
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects the comprehension questions and the retelling of the story (if applicable) and reviews the results with the student.

In the Phonics series, the student also reads the word list to show that he or she can read it with three or fewer errors at the goal rate. A graph shows how much the student’s fluency has improved since the cold timing.

Additional graphs show results for the comprehension questions, the retelling, and the word lists (if applicable).

Read Naturally Live is a component of Read Live, a subscription program that is licensed per student. Teachers can reassign licenses if students leave the program. Read Live subscriptions include access to all 23 levels of three series. All series have the same basic design with strategic differences.

  • Sequenced series is the basic series and has 13 levels (1.0 – 8.0) with 24 stories per level.
  • Phonics series adds phonics lessons and activities to the basic design and has 6 levels (0.8 – 2.7) with 24 stories per level.
pointer Phonics elements taught in the Phonics series
  • Idioms series teaches common American idioms as students work on reading skills.  Idioms has 4 levels (3.0 – 4.5) with 12 stories per level.
    pointer Featured idioms

The teacher assigns the appropriate series and level for each student. The student works through the level in the student program, and the teacher manages the student's progress in the teacher program.

Read Live is the program that allows me to continue to provide remedial reading services to a variety of students simultaneously. I am able to have a group of 8-10 students on level 0.8- 3.5 within the same timeframe. Since the blueprint for most stories & questions are similar, students are not embarrassed of their level. Students are thrilled when they complete a story and are able to choose another. The visual for CWPM is also exiting when students meet or exceed their goal. It is interesting to see students choose a story that is in line with core curriculum topics. The crossword puzzles also provide an additional level of vocabulary for students.

I am a special education teacher and I have used Read Live/Read Naturally for 15 years. It is a wonderful program. I have used it with middleschoolers and high schoolers. I currently teach 6-8. I love that I can circulate and work with 6 kids, on 6 different story topics and levels, on several different skills during the same time period. In my students with autism I've seen them developing the ability to infer from the surrounding passage. In my lowest level readers, I've seen fluency increase. All my students can create a five sentence paragraph story retell and I am seeing those writing skills carry over to their general education classes. In the past two years, we have gotten an influx 6th graders reading at the primer and 1st grade levels, and I would love to try Gate with these students.

I have used many different reading programs over the years in teaching both general and special education. I find that Read Naturally Live online is amazing in both student engagement but also for great data records. The students like the interesting facts they learn about and it gives me the opportunity to increase rigor by requiring full sentence responses, complete paragraph summaries and high points vocabulary practice. Then there is the added bonus of a colorful visual progress set of data for the students to see and find motivation from. The questions are useful for identifying types of comprehension issues which I can use for informing IEP development.

I have used Read Naturally for years and my students LOVE IT! The topics can be extended to reach any intellectual level, despite the student's reading level. I have even used this with a student that was gifted/ dyslexic and he had huge improvements in fluency and comprehension. I usually extend the lessons using videos and letting the kids pick a writing activity that can go with the topic they have read about. I do both the paper and online versions. The online version makes it so quick and easy to track progress and the kids are really motivated by seeing their graph increase. I recommend this to any teacher, Special Education or general classroom.

I have used Read Naturally in four different settings, and have had great student response. I am currently using it with Special Education high school students who are mostly reading at an elementary level. They find the stories to be high interest, and it often sparks discussions with the aides or others in the class when they share the content they have learned. I have my aides working directly with students, too, observing the cold timing and working on the pass activities, so students are able to advance at their own pace without much down time.

Students also love seeing their improvement from cold reading to hot reading, and work to improve their answers on the comprehension questions. If they get a comprehension question wrong after two tries, I work with them directly to show them how to figure out the correct answer. I love the data collection piece of Read Naturally. I am able to share the results with parents and the IEP team, so we know exactly which areas we need to work on. Some of the parents have requested copies of the stories, too, so they can see exactly what their child is learning and how they are answering.

My intervention students love Read Naturally. They enjoy reading engaging stories at their level. I love that there are so many different selections at various reading levels. Read Naturally reviews and challenges students to build fluency, phonics, and even keyboarding. I like that while I am working one on one with a student that there is a synonym and antonym section which is great for vocabulary. The kids LOVE to see their bars move up on the graph from their cold to hot reads. I have seen so much improvement and confidence in my student's reading ability in just 5 months. I would recommend Read Naturally to anyone looking for an excellent reading intervention.

We love Read LIVE-Read Naturally. We sit with the student while they are reading and they try hard to beat their cold-timing score. Also, both of us (teacher/paraeducator and the student) usually learn something about the subject the students choose to read about, whether it be about a famous person, an animal, or a historical event. Read LIVE has helped my Special Education Resource students learn and it also helps to increase their fluency, reading expression, keyboarding, and their comprehension. We would not be without the Read LIVE program. The kids love the program and use it on their Chromebooks! We love the reports that show their progress. Thank you for helping my students improve and grow!

I am a reading teacher who currently works with middle school students. Read Live offers stories that are interesting and contain sophisticated vocabulary. It can be overwhelming to preteens and teens to struggle with reading materials and also to practice weak skills with connected text that is babyish. Read Live presents topics that are current, historical and relatable. My students look forward to selecting stories that are of interest to them that do not talk down to where they are as learners. The program is designed with the goal of success for each and every student that interacts with its content. My students feel comfortable and confident in working with this amazing program to improve their reading skills.

As a teacher in a 6-8th grade special education class, I've witnessed remarkable progress in my students' reading abilities through the implementation of Read Live. This comprehensive program is designed to cater to the diverse needs of learners, focusing on fluency, comprehension, writing summaries, and phonemic awareness, particularly beneficial for students in lower grades. One of the standout features of Read Live is its ability to differentiate reading lessons, ensuring that each student receives instruction tailored to their individual strengths and areas for improvement. This level of customization is invaluable in a special education setting, where students often require personalized approaches to learning. I've observed significant growth in many of my students, but one particular success story stands out. One student, who initially began at a 1.3 reading level, has made astounding progress, now reading at a 3.5 level after just one year of using Read Live. This remarkable improvement not only speaks to the effectiveness of the program but also underscores its ability to empower students to reach their full potential. Beyond improving reading levels, Read Live fosters essential skills such as comprehension and writing summaries, equipping students with the tools they need to succeed academically. The program's structured approach, coupled with engaging activities, keeps students motivated and eager to participate in their learning journey. Moreover, the phonemic awareness component of Read Live addresses foundational skills crucial for reading development, laying a solid groundwork for future literacy achievements. By targeting these fundamental aspects of reading, the program sets students up for success not only in the classroom but also in their academic pursuits beyond. Read Live has proven to be an invaluable resource in my special education classroom, facilitating remarkable growth in reading abilities among students. Its emphasis on differentiation, coupled with its comprehensive approach to literacy development, makes it an indispensable tool for educators striving to meet the diverse needs of their students. With continued implementation, I am confident that Read Live will continue to empower students and foster a lifelong love of reading.

I am using Read Live, Word Warm Ups, One Minute Reader and also Signs for Sounds as an Elementary Reading Specialist (K-5). I work with students who struggle with reading in the general ed. population, as well as students diagnosed with dyslexia or students who have individual education plans due to specific learning disabilities. The students love to have the ability to choose and practice stories and watch their progress. They are so excited to demonstrate their fluent reading when they read to me to pass a story. I love that I can easily individualize practice for the students and have access to data at my fingertips to monitor progress. Word Warm Ups and Signs for Sounds are a great supplement to our district Structured Literacy approach for our struggling readers. Word Warm Ups again allows me to individualize student progress in phonetic skills and the students love the practice and ability to see their growth. I especially love how Signs for Sounds helps my students to segment sounds when spelling and differentiates between regular (Sound Out Words) and Irregular (Spell Out Words). The smile on my students' faces when I tell them we are going to be working in any one of these programs that day, says it all.

The writing of letters practice is a very nice addition, especially for 1st grade.

I just love this program! I am seeing great improvement in fluency, accuracy and comprehension. I love that I can have several students in the same group and they can all be working at different levels. The students also enjoy this program. They can't wait to sit down and start a new story. The stories are high interest stories that keep students engaged and thinking about their reading. I also have just started using the Data Mentor, I find it helpful.

Read Live has been an excellent resource for my reading intervention for 5th and 6th-grade students. Students are amazed when they do their "Hot Timing" and exceed their goal. With large groups in my classroom, the reading intervention was slow and difficult to differentiate until Read Naturally Live's program came to us. I have students do graphic organizers for non-fiction texts with each text they read and their comprehension levels are growing every day. Having the report information gives me an easy way to show parents and other staff how the student is excelling or struggling and exactly where we need to assist each student. I recommend Reading Live to any reading intervention teacher.

As a reading specialist (K-5), Read Live has been my favorite online learning platform hands-down. I love that I can adjust the programs and settings for each individual student. Some students use all three options (Read Live, One-Minute Reader, and Word Warm-Ups), while other students use either one or two, depending on their specific and individualized goals. I also love the progress monitoring tools that help me, as well as my students, see their progress as well as areas to strengthen. Read Live has improved my students’ reading fluency, stamina, and ability to answer questions - both in written response as well as multiple-choice. The kids love it too! My students love that they are able to choose the stories they read. They find the nonfiction stories engaging, and not so lengthy as to seem intimidating. Many of my students have expressed that they feel more successful with the Read Naturally stories then they do with other reading materials in school. In fact, several of my students have requested their login information so that they can use the platform at home. Nothing can make me happier than when kids are asking to read at home!

Read Live has helped my students to become more fluent readers at a very rapid rate of growth! I'm always so excited to share with their families that the growth is so high! It also is helping some of my other students who are working on the importance of comprehending what they read. This program is a great fit for some of my students during their IEP intervention time.

I absolutely love using the Read Naturally Live programs with my middle school special education students! I first used RNL approximately 10 years ago and have transitioned to 3 different schools since then. In each new school I was able to advocate for the use of Read Naturally Live for my students and was able to provide data to my administrators to demonstrate its effectiveness and gained their support to purchase the subscriptions for my students. I have found it to be extremely effective in a resource room setting where most of my students are on different instructional reading levels. This program is geared towards their individual needs and enables students to work at their own level to make significant gains. Every year that I have used this program I have had struggling readers make significant progress with some gaining 2+ years. This program works because it is based upon the Science of Reading and utilizes research-based, best practices reading instruction!

I have a 3rd and 4th Grade special education teacher, and I have seen fabulous results using Read Live and Word Warm Ups! My students are building confidence in their reading by visually seeing their growth. The program has been a great way for me to differentiate within groups while ensuring every student is getting adequate instruction and support.

I teach kids who are a little anxious while reading because English is a second language for them. At first they would not want to read aloud and now they look forward to reading to me, look up a glossary to know the meanings of difficult words and even challenge each other on their synonym and antonym scores. My students love it and i keep recommending the program to my fellow Interventionists!

Read live has been a great asset to our school and tom the ELAR department. It has bridged a gap between kids with learning disabilities and kids that struggle with fluency. Some of the students that use this program are our Spanish speaking students they are able to have the story red to them and it is helping them understand and speak English better.

As a Middle/High school Special Education teacher it is challenging to find materials that are high interest/controlled vocabulary. Read Live does a great job with this and also prepares my students for the content vocabulary they will need in science and social studies classes. I appreciate the comprehension questions and the opportunity to insist that the students respond in complete sentences, use the vocabulary and develop a paragraph summary. It hits all the language arts marks for my kids when I use it thoroughly. I also love that I have detailed documentation of progress in a wide variety of language arts skills areas immediately! Thank you for continuing to develop this program online!!!

Read Live has helped my beginning and struggling readers access the Word Work activities successfully by having audio options on the page. This helps the older students navigate the site independently and they feel good about themselves when they complete an activity. My students are loving the stories as well and like the challenge of a timed read! Such a great program, I'm so glad our district purchased the licenses for us!

I am an Education Specialist working to provide interventions for my students who struggle in academics. Read Naturally has been a great reading intervention for my struggling readers. After using Read Naturally my students have demonstrated significant improvement in reading fluency and comprehension. The nonfiction stories keep their interest as well. I have recently added Read Live to my small group instruction for some of my struggling readers. I have seen their fluency scores increase even though we have only been using the program for a short time. The students love to challenge themselves and beat their cold timing scores. I love how this program not only boost scores, but also build confidence in my students!

Read Live has been a wonderful tool for our literacy program. We've seen students improve in their fluency and accuracy over the years using this program- it is so great to see. I love the agency it grants students, and the mix of fluency, accuracy, and reading comprehension is great. It also is great typing practice for the students.

Read Live is a strong program for reading fluency and comprehension. Our elementary school has used it for over 5 years.

Desired Recommendations:
Two areas we would like to see added is being able to read the predictions that students are making, and the line tracker would also have a choice to track words.

My favorite 2 aspects of Read Live are the fluency work which is something kids do not often get enough practice with at the middle/high school levels, and the repetition of the reading process - from pre-reading to post-reading which is a habit that we need our students to learn.

I have used Read Naturally - One Minute Reader for approximately 10 years and have seen great results! I work with struggling readers and I have found that this program does in fact build fluency, comprehension and confidence! This year I decided to try Read Naturally Live and have found it to be an even better program for my students. I've been teaching reading intervention for 11 years and used many different tools, but Read Naturally has been the one tool I've stuck with over the years because it continues to prove to be effective with my struggling readers. Customer service is also great!

My students have made tremendous progress over the years using Read Naturally Live! My students who struggle with fluency have gained confidence and improved at rates that don't even compare to other programs that I have used. I find the comprehension and vocabulary components to be very beneficial as well. The students love the high-interest content and they are motivated to reach their goals. I can't say enough about the positive impact Read Naturally Live has had on my challenged readers.

Our school is the first and currently the only school in Bermuda for children with language-based learning differences. We have been using RNL since 2017 and have found it to be effective in strengthening our students' reading fluency and comprehension. The program is easy to implement, and our students enjoy being able to choose their stories and work to complete each level. Our teachers like the ease of placing students and the flexibility to move students to different levels when needed. RNL helps us target our student's individual needs and personalize their learning. We also appreciate having customer support with knowledgeable members of the team when needed.

We love Read Live in our district! It is an appealing, easy and engaging program for students to work on their fluency and reading comprehension. Students love seeing their success within one story! This success carries over to progress monitoring scores as well. Having Read Live is a great addition to the direct instruction within our Title One program. It also helps that the non-fiction stories are quite interesting for the students.

I have been using RNL with my Title One Reading groups and they love it! They are proud of themselves when they reach their reading goals and their confidence is growing. There is a nice variety of stories and students always find a topic that interests them. I like that we can select reading skills to target individual students needs. I love that RNL is aligned with Science of Reading and students are able to identify and apply what we learn during large group lesson to their RNL stories!

Absolutely LOVE read LIVE. It's a fabulous way for students to engage in authentic nonfiction texts with great comprehension. Our students have excelled at practicing main idea, vocabulary, sequencing, summarizing and other skills for each and every story. Being able to give specific feedback is invaluable. There has been a strong positive correlation between students that participate in read naturally and pass our state assessment. My only wish is to have some fiction passages that aren't idioms. I don't think I'd use any other program for interventions if fiction passages (not idioms) were created. Highly recommend.

Read Live is an amazing program. I have seen my student's ORF rates soar with this program. The students that comprise my class are on multiple reading levels and it makes instruction difficult. Reading Live takes the stress off of meeting the needs of multiple struggling readers and maximizes reading time. Students can successfully work on their reading level while I support them. The stories available to the students are engaging and relevant. The data collected from the reports section is valid and is exactly what my district wants in data meetings. I just attended a Reading League training and this program is aligned with the Science of Reading. I am so thankful for this program and feel confident as a teacher that I am providing science-based practices to my reading instruction.

My daughter was in 4th grade and a very reluctant reader. A teacher in our school at the time found Read Naturally and implemented it as the reading program in her 5th grade class. This is when it was on CDs! My daughter went from a 2nd to a 5th grade reading level in about 3 months. It changed her school experience for the better. She is 30 now and she is a voracious reader and writer. I credit Read Naturally for the dramatic improvement and the confidence it gave her when she exceeded her fluency goal. I personally like the non-fiction stories. They are interesting and she still recalls some of them. Thank you!

My school uses this for high school Special Education students. While this is good research-based material, the stories are extremely boring. My students HATE using this program, and it is the equivalent of busy work. Students find another story about a species of lizard to be troublesome, and they are desperate for content that is of any interest to people over 7 years old. I have been trying to get my school to get rid of the program. It is retarding progress with our most at need students because they dread it. It is a weekly punishment they must endure. This attitude is only a product of wrestling with my students, not my projection of ideas on them.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your review!

Often in these scenarios, adjusting program settings – such as reducing the number of required read alongs – can help to increase engagement for older students. We offer great insight into customizing the program based on student need & grade in our online knowledgebase here: Knowledgebase :: Adapting Read Naturally Live to Meet Individual Students’ Needs :: Read Naturally, Inc.

That said, although Read Live is widely used in high schools, adult literacy programs, juvenile detention centers and even adult prisons, no program is right for all students and settings.

Please let us know if we can provide further guidance to assist in your implementation!

I love the program, and it has provided a perfect intervention for my 5th graders. I wondered if you have plans to add Word Warm-Ups level 2 (two syllable words) and Level 3 (multisyllabic words) to the Live edition? My students' level of participation has increased so much since incorporating the Live edition (over the older version that required CD players (with batteries that went dead, and headphones that never worked). Would very much like to see the next two levels added to LIVE!!

Carolyn, I'm with you on inquiring about the Word Warm-Ups Level 2 and Level 3. I love that you can place students on the Sequence Stories and then have them work on those Word Warm-Up Levels where they are having difficulty with decoding those syllable types on just words to increase their fluency. I am also a huge fan of the Read Live vs. paper-pencil, CD version.

TJ Ihnot, Marketing at Read Naturally Apr 8, 2021

We’re so glad your students are having success! Word Warm-ups Live Level 2 is in development and should be available this fall. Level 3 will take a little longer, but we are planning to add that content as well.

I gave the placement assessment today virtually for the first time to a brand new student to our program. I shared my screen. It was so simple. I was able to place him in less than 10 minutes. With the extra time, I gave the student and his Nanna a walkthrough of the Read Live process from Cold Read to Hot Read all from my computer! Being able to log in as the student makes this possible!

I had used the paper version of Read Naturally for many years with my English As A Second Language students. I loved the way it let me differentiate instruction and the excellent background knowledge and rich vocabulary the children received from the non-fiction stories. After I retired I began volunteering in an under-served city school district and used the paper program in one on one tutoring sessions with native English speakers who were reading below grade level. When schools closed due to the current health crisis, I didn't know how I could help these children anymore, but with Read Live, the excellent support from the Read Naturally videos and webinars, and the Chromebooks that were distributed to the students I have been able to continue working with my students and experience even more growth in their progress. The children are very engaged in their learning and it shows in their positive improvement.

Thank you so much for helping me to begin using your program for my 7th grade special education reading students. I was assisted in a timely manner and I always felt satisfied with the feedback and support provided by a gentleman by the name of Joel Olson. He was patient with me and always took the time to make sure I was leaving our support conversation with the answers to the questions I had. I would love nothing more than to continue using your reading program, however, I will be leaving my current teaching position at Shepherd and moving to Poston, another junior high school in the Mesa School District. I will be teaching Pre-Algebra. I highly recommend this program and would gladly recommend the support staff (especially Joel) to help teachers who are new to Read Naturally. Thank you again for the opportunity to use your program.

Our school is an at-risk elementary school with 93% poverty. We have been using the program for 5+ years. We are thrilled with the program and love the success rate of our students. Our students are so engaged and love the stories, they even research stories further to learn more. The graphs are motivating and lend themselves to the student success. After assessing students and targeting the students in greatest need we are able to track progress with the very precise assessment components that are part of the Read Live program. One of the great aspects of this program is the variety that is offered. Not only variety in the stories but the variety in the skills that can be covered. The success of any intervention is targeting the skills needed specifically by each individual student.

My 4th grade daughter was placed in the ReadNaturally program at the top of the school year and I was struggling with accepting the fact that she was having trouble with reading comprehension. My daughter reads fluently but she was having trouble with sequencing, summarizations, and finding the main idea of a story. I was reluctant but I wanted to help her to become more confident in her schoolwork. Thankfully, this program came along to fill in the gaps. I’m amazed at the progress my daughter has achieved. She’s happier and less stressed while doing her homework and she looks forward to completing her ReadLive stories. We still struggle in some areas but I’ve seen a a major difference in her behavior and her test scores. We will continue to implement this program as long as it’s available. Thank You

This is the first year for Read Naturally Live for 30 students in a Title 1 Reading and LAP Reading program for grades 2-6. We had been using the old Read Naturally on computers .8-5.6 and before that just on paper. You have come a long ways. I attended the session last year in Las Vegas at the National Teacher Conference. This summer I will attend the Colorado Springs session on June 26 to learn more. I work in a small, rural school K-12 with under 500 students. I am the reading specialist for students in K-6 in the Title 1 and LAP program. I surveyed my students who used the program this year. Overall, they liked the new program and I do hope we can continue to fund the program. Thank you, Mary Johnson 6-4-19.

We have used Read Live as a reading intervention for three years. What we love about the program is that it includes so many critical reading components, such as rich vocabulary, predicting, reading along with a fluent reader, rereading the text for building fluency, answering different types of questions for comprehension (always including a question covering the main idea and one on sequencing), and a retell. Also, students are placed at their own reading level. As a bonus, the students love the content of the stories as they are interesting nonfiction topics and are often ones they have not read about before. Excellent program!

I can’t recommend this product more highly. I use it with my students who are on red or yellow in DIBELS and the progress they make is incredible. I’m a 2nd grade teacher so the reading levels in my class go from C-R! I love Read Naturally because it can help all the levels without purchasing separate modules. It is so easy to administer that I have a parent volunteer help out. I wish there was a talk to text feature so the students could record their own predictions and retell. I tried that feature in iPads but it was pretty inaccurate in translations of 7 and 8 year old voices.

Get this product! It is so affordable and best of all it works.
