Read Naturally Live is an online reading program that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. Text and audio guide the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks student progress.

pointer Research basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

Read Naturally Live is a research-based, online reading program

Read Naturally Live Steps
  1. Select a Story
The student clicks on the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.
  2. Key Words
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story. In the Phonics series, the student listens to a phonics lesson and reads words that have the featured phonics patterns.
  3. Prediction
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story.
  4. Cold Timing
The teacher may time the student for one minute as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student clicks unknown words while reading, and then clicks the last word read during the timing. Read Naturally Live subtracts the unknown words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score and displays it on a graph. This step establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  5. Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  6. Practice
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  7. Quiz
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story.
  8. Retell/Word List
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension.
In the Phonics series, the student works on decoding skills by practicing the word list until able to read it accurately at a predetermined rate. The Phonic series also includes a spelling step to give students practice encoding words from the word list.
  9. Pass
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects the comprehension questions and the retelling of the story (if applicable) and reviews the results with the student.

In the Phonics series, the student also reads the word list to show that he or she can read it with three or fewer errors at the goal rate. A graph shows how much the student’s fluency has improved since the cold timing.

Additional graphs show results for the comprehension questions, the retelling, and the word lists (if applicable).

Read Naturally Live is a component of Read Live, a subscription program that is licensed per student. Teachers can reassign licenses if students leave the program. Read Live subscriptions include access to all 23 levels of three series. All series have the same basic design with strategic differences.

  • Sequenced series is the basic series and has 13 levels (1.0 – 8.0) with 24 stories per level.
  • Phonics series adds phonics lessons and activities to the basic design and has 6 levels (0.8 – 2.7) with 24 stories per level.
pointer Phonics elements taught in the Phonics series
  • Idioms series teaches common American idioms as students work on reading skills.  Idioms has 4 levels (3.0 – 4.5) with 12 stories per level.
    pointer Featured idioms

The teacher assigns the appropriate series and level for each student. The student works through the level in the student program, and the teacher manages the student's progress in the teacher program.

We are so pleased with Read Live and the progress our students are making. The passages are interesting for the students, which helps with these reluctant readers. The reports are so helpful, giving details that help us document progress and develop action plans. The program is very cost-effective, covers a wide range of skills, and is student-friendly.

Since incorporating Read Live with my special education reading small groups, I have seen huge improvements with all students, no matter their needs or level. It has increased their reading confidence, most importantly! Their improvements are not only shown when reading passages at their level, but also when they are screened with grade level passages.

Read Live is a fantastic program for students with learning differences. My students use Read Live 4-5 days a week and are showing improvement in reading WPM, vocabulary, comprehension (especially retelling), reading level, and overall reading confidence. I love how the program can be individualized for each student. My slower processors and typers have the max time for retelling the story which helps them complete what they want to say. The reports and monitoring help me keep on top of my students needs and accomplishments. We just finished mid-year assessments and all of my students are improving. I have Read Live to partially thank for that. Thank You from a very satisfied language arts teacher.

Not only has it helped my students, but it helps me in my classroom. Students are able to be pretty independent with Read Live which frees up time for me to complete progress monitoring tasks my district requires.

Read Naturally is my favorite intervention program that we use in our school. It is very interactive and the kids really enjoy it. The stories are interesting and keep students engaged. I have even learned many random facts and have used my knowledge to win trivia contests with family. The kids are always excited when they “level up”. I have never had a student that dreads coming to learn on Read Live with me & that makes my job even easier!

Read LIVE is so important in our Resource Special Ed Room! The kids love reading the stories, improve their fluency scores, and love to do the Vocabulary builder short quizzes before the Red/Yellow tab Assessment is completed by the teacher with the student. The students have improved so much in their reading comprehension as well. Having to type responses also helps the students with their keyboarding skills. I must also add, by sitting with the students, I have learned so many new facts about various subjects. Keep up the good work!

I am an elementary special education teacher, and I have been using Read Naturally Live for reading fluency and comprehension since I began teaching in the LRC room two years ago. My students have made great progress using this program. They love the interesting stories and especially enjoy completing the crossword puzzle at the end of each lesson.
From a teacher’s perspective, I appreciate how quick and easy the program is to set up. After just a few sessions, students can work independently, which allows me to provide targeted support where it’s needed most. Many of my students are in the same grade but read at very different levels and Read Live Naturally makes it easy to keep each student working at their own instructional level.
I am so thankful our school found this program—it is one of the most frequently used and most valuable instructional resources I have in my classroom.

I have been using Read Naturally Live for several years. This program is very effective for small-group intervention in grades 3-5. Enables easy differentiation for students of all ages and instructional levels. I am able to effectively differentiate to meet the needs of each student. My students love the high-interest nonfiction passages. The built in progress monitoring tool enables me to review data and inform parents, administrators and classroom teachers of my students' strengths and weaknesses. In addition, I use the Word Warm Ups Live features with third grade students to reinforce decoding & word attack strategies. One Minute Reader is the icing on the cake- each student can work at their own pace and practice fluency and comprehension skills while I am working with individual students. 10/10 recommend this product for any school district looking for a quality reading intervention program!!

This is my 3rd year utilizing the Read Live program in my self-contained classroom. I teach seventh grade students that are reading, on average, at a third grade level. My students have shown so much growth through using this reading program. Not only has their reading fluency increased but also there have been improvements to their reading comprehension skills as well. I know that my students get excited when they pass a story and are able to put their sticker on their charts. The program does a great job using the ribbon system to visually show students how well they did on each story. We are currently trying to find time within the school day to incorporate the Read Live program into our co-taught schedule. I think that this program would be beneficial to those students as well. In my thirteen year teaching, I have tried multiple reading programs and I can say that we have seen the most growth with his program than any other!

Read Live is a great resource or tool to reinforce areas of reading, as well as to measure growth. In addition, it also shares useful stories that have some factual information, but are entertaining for students. I would love to see total number count at the end of each line to measure reading fluency, as well as a key for teachers so we can focus on listening to more students read instead of taking time to create a key for each story in order to measure comprehension. Overall, this is a great tool and a quick way to see a snapshot of how students are progressing and in what areas they struggle.

Thank you for using Read Live! The program automatically calculates the student's word-correct-per-minute score so that neither the student nor the teacher has to waste any time counting words. The program also automatically grades the quiz and provides immediate audio feedback for the student about whether they got a question right or wrong. The teacher does need to mark the short-answer question as correct or incorrect, but there is a "See correct answer" button available on that screen for them to view possible responses. When a student gets a question wrong, the teacher may choose to go over the answer with them. They can do so by clicking to reopen the question from the Pass/Review Work screen. There is a dropdown field that allows the teacher to toggle between the student's answer and the correct answer, so the teacher does not need to spend time searching for the answer themselves. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Support Team with any questions.

I used the print Read Naturally (with cd's) in a school several years ago, and I saw great success. A couple of years ago, I asked for Read Live for my resource classes. In one semester, I saw students improve their fluency and increase their text difficulty level. I worry about over-using technology in the classroom, however, the students who use Read Live really enjoy it. They like being able to choose their story and work at their own pace. I use it twice a week in select groups. The students look forward to it as it is a mix of independent work and teacher interaction. The visual graphs help students understand where they are and where they need to work to get. Most importantly, though, is the growth in fluency and vocabulary.

Wow! Just Wow!! I have used the Read Naturally Encore for quite a while and have even made a google classroom to essentially make the encore program in to my own version of read live. We had 1 fourth grade student who did not hit our 3rd grade target so we needed intervention for our RIMP. So I thought I'd just give the 60 day trial a go for Read Live. I sat next to him and walked him through the program. His cold to hot increase was amazing. But more impressive I had him dictate a re-tell to me and I typed it in (more for times sake this first time through). He used vocab from the story "He challenged the police to lock him up" (Houdini). Also saying sentence like "Then, far more interesting....." I am looking forward to seeing how he continues to do without me walking him through the program and I the nature of the computer based intervention has huge potential for us to use with more students to improve our students reading benchmark tests! What a WIN!!

The teachers and the students did not want any part of this program. I had used it many times in the past and I knew it could be a game changer for us. I begged teachers to just give it a chance for 5 weeks over ESY. We are now starting the school year on Monday and every teacher who gave this program a chance is now enthusiastic about getting to (not having to) use it for the school year. When a program can change the outlook of a second year teacher and a 25 year teacher and give hope to students with a reading disability, that program can only be Read Naturally.

Without Christy, we would have given up in week two. I think teachers appreciate when they see someone, who is like them, who is really going to bat for a program. Teachers almost feel like they have to give this program a chance because this person, who they can see themselves in, is fighting for it so fiercely. Christy was there for us at all hours, even though many of those hours were inconvenient for her. She always followed up with an email that gave resources the teachers could use that day. I was so thrilled to hear one of our teachers say in front of Christy, “It is so wonderful to hear my students reading!” I was so glad that Christy got to hear that feedback. She absolutely had a major role in making that happen. We are a very small charter school in a very poor section of Philadelphia. 99% of our students are free and reduced lunch and their families live below the poverty line. They do not have access to technology and many of their parents are not literate. I go into this new school year with hope because in the five weeks that we had read naturally, our students started reading. I ended up putting this program on my personal credit card because the school can’t afford it. That’s how much I believe in this program. This school year, I know we will see miracles great and small, and Read Naturally will play a major role in that. I will keep you all posted…

Our district in MA has been using Read Live Licenses for many years now. Read Naturally's program is easy-to-use and is clearly very effective. We will continue with our licenses for the forseeable future!

This is the best program to work on reading fluency. My school uses it every year with our students who get flagged for weaker fluency skills, and by the end of the year, they typically are no longer at risk. I appreciate how you can customize the settings to provide more support with short answer, retelling, repeat readings, or less support in these areas.

At Hamilton Elementary, we’ve seen incredible results with Read Live, and we couldn’t be more impressed with the impact it's had on our students. We originally introduced the program to support our intervention students, and the growth in their reading fluency was so impressive that we quickly decided to implement it across our entire third-grade level.

Now, every third grader in our school uses Read Live—and the progress has been nothing short of amazing. Nearly all of our students are reading more words per minute, showing stronger comprehension, and even developing better typing skills thanks to the online format. We’re seeing not just higher test scores, but more confident, motivated readers who are excited to track their own progress and challenge themselves.

Read Live provides structured, engaging, and research-based support that’s easy for teachers to manage and incredibly effective for students at all levels. The built-in progress monitoring makes it easy to celebrate growth, set goals, and tailor instruction. It has truly become an essential part of our literacy program.

If you're looking for a powerful tool to boost fluency and build confident readers, Read Live is it. We highly recommend it to any school serious about improving literacy outcomes!

Read Live has been a miracle program for our students! We are a Title 1 school, and so oftentimes, we have 40% or more of our students in reading intervention programs. It is so easy to put students into Read Live and know that they will grow, whether they need the phonics support from the word lists or the fluency and comprehension growth from the upper levels. It is also easy for our instructional assistants to learn the program and have no prep required. Students love the program, too, because the stories are so interesting to them--they can learn about real life: animals, people and events in history, places around the world. I love how it gives them background knowledge and sparks their curiosity to learn more. We love this program so much that we ordered Gate+ to help our younger students because it follows many of the same steps, just in a direct instruction manner that prepares them for the independently structured Read Live program.

We've seen a remarkable transformation in our students' reading abilities since implementing Read Live in our literacy intervention program. This program has proven to be an incredibly effective tool for improving both reading fluency and comprehension—two of the most critical components of literacy development.
It's easy to implement and monitor, while students are motivated by the clear goals and interactive format. For schools looking to boost literacy outcomes, Read Live is a proven solution that delivers measurable results.

I just started using Read Naturally Live this year! I could not be more impressed. The students' reading scores, oral reading, and comprehension scores are really improving. Students of all ages (mine grades 6-12) find it easy and enjoyable, so they have no problem completing the lessons.

Our district started using this program with our ESL population this year. We like that it covers a wide variety of grade levels and phonic levels. We also have some older students using the idioms stories. It is an added bonus that these stories are all nonfiction so that we can increase background knowledge in most students. The program is easy to use, log into, and is motivational. It's a great way for kids to catch up with peers!

Read Live has been an invaluable tool for supplementing my kids' fluency practice. Its ability to provide individualized practice and instruction has significantly benefited my students.

One of the standout features of Read Live is its capacity to differentiate instruction. This allows me to tailor the learning experience to each student's unique needs, ensuring they receive the support they require to succeed.

Furthermore, the platform facilitates one-on-one time with students, enabling me to effectively remediate specific skills. This personalized attention has proven to be incredibly impactful in helping students overcome their challenges and improve their reading fluency.

Overall, Read Live serves as a wonderful supplement to my existing curriculum, enhancing my teaching strategies and supporting my students' reading development. It has truly made a positive difference in my classroom.

We use Read Live as an addition to our direct service. The ability to tailor Read Live stories to reinforce what is being directly taught is a bonus. The reports are helpful to help identify growth and "still needs to be supported" areas.

Read live is easy to use and easy to implement! Read live helps to hold students more accountable as they are required to make a certain amount of growth in order to pass through a fluency passage. This allows the teacher to hold students accountable to being invested in the intervention. I also like that there are comprehension questions and retelling or quiz options that can be turned on or off to tailor needs to specific students.

This is a wonderful program to help students increase their fluency and accuracy. We use it as an after school supplemental program for students who are testing just below benchmark on DIBELS oral reading fluency assessments. We have seen their scores steadily increase since using this program. We also use the One Minute Live program as an at home support for families who are looking for more resources to help their children.

I started Read Naturally Live during COVID shutdown and was so pleased and was thrilled with the results. My aide and I were able to work with our students online and they were able to work from home. While other people saw regression, our students that used the program made growth. The parents asked to continue using the program at home even after we returned to campus. I have continued using the program and am still PLEASED with the results. The data provided is beneficial in tracking growth and reporting on IEPs or to parents and other teachers. Thank you for a fabulous program.

Read Live has been lovely, it's • Read Naturally Live, • Word Warm-ups Live, & • One Minute Reader Live, cover all the basics, vocab, phonics, sight words, reading fluency, and comprehension. No bells and whistles, just a great learning experience that is best done with a teacher, however students can also work independently on parts of it. I pray my district adopts it not only for my SPED students, but for the elementary as well, the students would all benefit. Thanks for the introductory offer, I was able to get some of my students started on a road to reading better.

I love Read Live!!!!!! I wish my free trial wasn't ending. My principal isn't sure if we will have the funds to continue it. I shared with my kids that this is our last week using it and they all were bummed. They loved being able to pick their stories and seeing the bar graph of their progress. Thanks for the free trial and hopefully we will find the funds to continue it. Great program!!!!

I will have to admit I was very concerned at first with my students working with this program. After being a teacher for over 20 years, I have noticed that some computer programs allow students to continue to hit next or "trick" the program into thinking they have a skill that they do not. I love how the teacher has the ability to go back and adjust the students lesson. I can make adjustments to better fit the specific skill that I am wanting to target with each of my students. I can also slow down my students that have a tendency to rush through things. I think this is a good tool to use along with a phonics program.

I've been using Read Live for 6 years now, and I still love it and believe in it more and more each year. My students' fluency improves every year, most of them at least by one grade level, other students more. The students love to see their progression over time, and push themselves to read more. I love how I can customize settings for each student. I have some middle students that are still on a first grade reading level, so I change their settings in order that they don't become frustrated, and I can change them as they start to improve. I also love that I can give them a placement tests at my discretion. This has proven to motivate students more, they almost always show growth. This is a very motivational program, and very teacher and student friendly.

I have been using Read Live for over 25 years. The reason I continue to use this program is the success that I see with the students. The rereads help the students keep track of their learning by tracking their own fluency. They have a goal and try to achieve that number or higher with each reading. You should see their face light up with a big smile when they reach their personalized goal. As an incentive, they get a sticker on a chart for making their goal.

I switched roles at the beginning of the school year and was so overwhelmed with the new position, I did not renew the Read Live account due to not knowing how I would fit it all in. Shame on me! After using it now for just a couple of weeks and seeing how the students are already reading more fluently, I am disappointed in myself for not giving them the entire year. They say, hindsight is 20/20! My students will now start the next year with this great resource and I am excited to see where they land!

Read Live has had an effective impact on the primary students in my building, particularly when it comes to boosting their reading fluency. The program provides students with a structured, engaging approach to practice reading skills at their own pace. What’s especially helpful is that it tailors the reading material to each student's level, making sure they are challenged without feeling overwhelmed. It’s easy to use, motivating for students, and provides the support and structure they need to succeed.

I have been using Read Live with a group of 7th-grade students this year. The students love using Read Live and often request it when starting a lesson for the day. They use it independently, and it allows me to check in on individual students who might need extra support. It makes planning lessons easier for me and I can see progress through the program. Read Live is perfect for middle school students who are reluctant readers. The short stories are engaging and offer the students choices about what they read.

Read Live has been a game-changer this year! Students have made noticeable progress with fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The stories are diverse and interesting. Students enjoy choosing stories, working towards their goals, and seeing immediate results. I like that students can work independently and also with me. The vocabulary and quiz components add depth and purpose. It's more than another repeated reading fluency program. I especially like being able to adjust and control functions and the detailed reports. Students enjoy viewing their graphs and the information is excellent to share with classroom teachers and parents. I can also adjust and plan for instruction using the data gathered. Read Live has been an invaluable tool for my students. It allows them to work on fluency and comprehension at their own pace and level, which helps them feel more confident in their reading skills. I particularly appreciate how they can read along with the story out loud and then practice reading independently. The word lists are also a great feature, providing extra opportunities for students to practice word recognition.

One area my students often struggle with is vocabulary, but Read Live helps them make significant progress by offering the story as a reference to help with definitions. This support is crucial, especially when answering comprehension questions. I've noticed a real improvement in their comprehension skills, thanks to the ability to refer back to the text when needed.

The students also love seeing their progress after each "hot read." Even when they don't meet their goal, they appreciate the opportunity to try again and improve next time. This reinforces a growth mindset and motivates them to keep working hard.

Overall, both my students and I have greatly enjoyed using Read Live, and we've seen noticeable growth in their reading skills!

I have been using Read Naturally for years and I am a big fan. I love the fact that it hits so many target areas all in one program; decoding, encoding, fluency, vocabulary, writing, concrete and inferential thinking .... I also really like the data that I can use when writing progress notes on the student's ability in each of those areas. It is good, concrete data that I can share with parents and coworkers. I plan to keep using this program for years!

I have been looking for an all inclusive program for my Special Education middle school students. I wanted a program that helped increase their basic decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. This program is very engaging to the students. I ask them who loves it and I was surprised by all of the positive feedback. Students love choosing their own stories and that they can listen to someone read as they practice reading and that they can see their improvements through graphs immediately. I love all the components, the independent features for the students and that the teacher has the ability to turn on and off features and that teachers have to put in their code before a student can take a test. I piloted this program and I am not sure if my county or school will help purchase it, but for me as a teacher, I love it!

I teach reading to students with reading disabilities. When I pair Read Live practice with systematic sequential phonics practice, students make huge gains in their ability to read more fluently. The Read Live practice helps students build vocabulary and reading endurance. This year I have had 6th graders who read one new story a week gain 25 words per minute on a first read and have gained a year of growth in their Independent Reading Levels.

Read Live is excellent and we use it a lot to support our weak readers, EAL students who need phonics support and dyslexics. It helps students to speed up their reading, improve comprehension and improve their vocab and is an all-round support for all reading issues. I have used Read Live for years. As an Orton Gillingham Reading Intervention Specialist in middle and high school, I find Read Live especially beneficial for those students who have mastered phonics and are at the stage of generalizing learned skills into the content area subjects. I like that there are various topics at each level. This helps keep students interested and choose topics relevant to their learning. I love that the teacher has flexibility in altering each student's program settings. For example, I have a student with very high comprehension but low fluency. I limit the amount of comprehension activities he has to do and increase the fluency and repetition drills. I feel it is essential for the teacher to be involved with the students' learning and sit alongside them as they interact with the program. However, the program does lend itself nicely to independent work when appropriate. Finally, the program's data is extremely valuable for IEP goal writing and progress monitoring.
