Read Naturally Live is an online reading program that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. Text and audio guide the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks student progress.
Research basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

Read Naturally Live Steps
- Select a Story
The student clicks on the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material. - Key Words
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story. In the Phonics series, the student listens to a phonics lesson and reads words that have the featured phonics patterns. - Prediction
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story. - Cold Timing
The teacher may time the student for one minute as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student clicks unknown words while reading, and then clicks the last word read during the timing. Read Naturally Live subtracts the unknown words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score and displays it on a graph. This step establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve. - Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing. - Practice
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story. - Quiz
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story. - Retell/Word List
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension.
In the Phonics series, the student works on decoding skills by practicing the word list until able to read it accurately at a predetermined rate. The Phonic series also includes a spelling step to give students practice encoding words from the word list. - Pass
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects the comprehension questions and the retelling of the story (if applicable) and reviews the results with the student.
In the Phonics series, the student also reads the word list to show that he or she can read it with three or fewer errors at the goal rate. A graph shows how much the student’s fluency has improved since the cold timing.
Additional graphs show results for the comprehension questions, the retelling, and the word lists (if applicable).
Read Naturally Live is a component of Read Live, a subscription program that is licensed per student. Teachers can reassign licenses if students leave the program. Read Live subscriptions include access to all 23 levels of three series. All series have the same basic design with strategic differences.
- Sequenced series is the basic series and has 13 levels (1.0 – 8.0) with 24 stories per level.
- Phonics series adds phonics lessons and activities to the basic design and has 6 levels (0.8 – 2.7) with 24 stories per level.
Phonics elements taught in the Phonics series - Idioms series teaches common American idioms as students work on reading skills. Idioms has 4 levels (3.0 – 4.5) with 12 stories per level.
Featured idioms
The teacher assigns the appropriate series and level for each student. The student works through the level in the student program, and the teacher manages the student's progress in the teacher program.

This is the best reading program I have ever used! My students are being successful and showing gains as well as shortening their gaps. They love it and are excited when they see how successful they can be with the program. Thank you and we will keep using it from here on out. Best program I have used! I have worked in reading intervention for 17 years. Over the years we have seen many programs come and go but this has stayed with our school the whole time. We have been using it clear back when it was on cds only. We love it even better now that it’s on the computer. And I should say the students do also. We find the ease of being able to track a students progress and easily print out reports to be an added bonus. The students that we have helped through the years is tremendous. Thank you Read Naturally!! Reply Jeff Brummett Mar 11, 2025

I have used Read Naturally Live for Special Education Reading for over five years. It has been beneficial for multi grade levels and a diverse set of reading abilities. Students show progress over the years they use it. I even pass on their logins and have parents use it with the students at home. Students show progress, in Vocabulary, comprehension and fluency skills.
I enjoy that it is individualized for the student for their IEPs to track their growth.

The stories available are engaging and offer a wealth of learning opportunities. Witnessing my students make progress in their reading journey is truly priceless. This program has proven to be an invaluable resource for both educators and students alike.

Michele Calvin has provided our school with exceptional support! My initial set-up meeting could have been extremely complicated since we were attempting to merge numerous trial accounts into one site license account. She gave me the answers I needed and also gave my information to others that could help with additional tech. support. I explained what my ideal training would look like for our school and she went out of her way to deliver it. We just completed her training today, and I have heard numerous comments about how valuable it was. Not only did she give our staff clear practical information on how to use Read Naturally with fidelity, she was also able to answer our specific questions. The staff feels motivated, confident and has the resources/contact information they need to be successful. Thank you Michele!

We use Read Live with my second grade students. I love the confidence my students gain while using this program! Not only their confidence but their vocabulary is stronger. The kids enjoy going and the miss when they can't be there. I am always being asked, "When is Read Live?". I really believe that Read Live is a key piece in helping out kiddos become stronger, confident and more fluent readers! Reply Emily Mar 11, 2025

Read Live has helped my students in intervention gain not only phonics and fluency skills but independent and self-advocacy skills as well! Working through the sections they can do on their own has given them a sense of pride in their abilities. When it is time for the teacher to join, once shy students are confident to raise their hands and say they are ready to pass a story. It has been amazing to see their reading and behavior skills soar with Read Live! Reply Amy Brandriet Mar 11, 2025

My students in 2nd-5th grade have improved their fluency tremendously since starting Read Naturally Live. I love the vibe in the learning lab when everyone is working hard and making progress! Read Naturally is a great program. I love the high interest stories, the repetition, the data, and the growth I see in my students. I have used it for 8 years and continue to think it is one of the most powerful tools in our program. One thing I would like to see change would be the ability to speed up the read aloud for my more fluent students. Sometimes it feels slow and robotic through the read aloud portion, and can lose the attention of some students. Reply Customer Service Mar 13, 2025
Thank you for using Read Live! The number and speed of required read alongs can be adjusted in Story Options. Please click here for instructions on how to do so, and feel free to reach out to our Tch Support Team with any questions!

Read Naturally Live has been an amazing program for all our Elementary School students. The program is engaging for all students. The students love picking the passage that they will read. Each passage allows them to practice fluency, learn vocabulary words, answer comprehension questions, and write a summary of what they have read.
We are able to collect thorough data for each student and love seeing their growth. Thank you Read Naturally Live for an amazing program! Reply Caroline Alexander Mar 11, 2025

I have used Read Naturally for the past 20 years and have loved the development of the online program! The program incorporates the components of the teaching of reading from phonemic awareness to Inferential Comprehension. It is most effective when the teacher and student are really working together with intent. The visual graphing needs to be looked at together and discussed to help with motivation and with rigor even written expression skills can be taught and assessed, I can differentiate and individualize the program for any skill level as is essential for any Special Education teacher. The data available is so useful for data-driven intervention planning. The stories are varied and of generally high interest which is also greatly appreciated! Well done over all these years, Read Naturally!

Read Naturally Live is a great program. My students are very engaged and enjoy reading the stories. They have even gone on to read more about a topic on their own. Students love seeing their fluency graphs go up as they increase their speed with each reading. They love setting goals and then reaching them. The comprehension component is terrific as well. Students get immediate feedback and the opportunity to try again. They also receive immediate coaching from me. Reply Leigh-Anna Sirois Mar 11, 2025

Read Live has been the perfect tool to differentiate reading! Each student is working, practicing and mastering skills at their level. The non-fiction stories are high interest and keep students engaged. In the higher level stories, students practice retelling the stories by typing and using their summarizing skills. Each level also introduces vocabulary that is useful and grade level appropriate. I love working through stories with students in Read Live! Reply Beth Willis Mar 11, 2025

If you love Read Naturally, Read Naturally Live is that and so much more! This year is my 8th year using this online fluency, phonics and comprehension program as a part of my learning support program. I've used it when I worked at a private school and now in public school. I like to use it with 2nd graders up through high school. The best part is when the students get excited to see their own progress. Also, when I meet with parents they often report their kids reading more and more fluently when at home! That is the best news to me! Reply Nicole Milewski Mar 11, 2025

I've been using Read Live for three years as part of my small reading intervention groups, working with 1st through 4th graders on automaticity. While I do see improvements in my students and can confirm that the program is effective, I have to be honest—it's painfully boring.
In all my time using Read Live, I’ve had maybe two students who actually enjoyed it. The material is dry, and there’s very little content that engages the 6-10-year-olds I work with. Every day, I dread having to tell my students, "It's time for Read Live again," because I know they’ll groan in response. They do it because I require it, not because they’re excited to learn.
Does the program work? Yes, and I applaud it for that. But learning should be more than just effective—it should be engaging, too. If Read Live could incorporate more exciting, high-interest stories and interactive elements, it could make a world of difference. Right now, it’s just not a fun way to learn. If they figure out a way to do for reading what Prodigy did for math (make it fun & exciting) , I'll change this to 5 stars!

Read Naturally Live has been created a way for me to support students in an intervention setting who are multiple levels. I have some students working at the Phonics level and others at the fifth grade level. Students are learning that practice is essential and that they can measure their own growth. Some students enjoy being competitive with each other to see who is able to beat their own goal, while others are happy to simply challenge themselves. The stories are always informative and there are enticing topics that most students enjoy. Students are learning to distinguish between main idea and details, and to use text evidence on every story. I love it! Reply Tsvetana D Mawicke Mar 11, 2025

I work as a special educator with 5th and 6th-grade students. ReadLive is the reading and writing comprehension I use with them. I have been using ReadLive for the last 3 years, and I am pleased with my students' progress. ReadLive is super beneficial and helps my students increase their fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and background knowledge. I love Read Naturally Live. As a special education resource teacher I used the original paper version. Now I'm using it as a reading interventionist. I love that my students have choice within the program and freedom to work at their own pace. For those students who are naturally quiet, Read Live gives me ample opportunity to meet with them one-on-one. The program provides my student practice in all areas of reading: vocabulary development, fluency modeling/practice and comprehension. Additionally, the Read Live team is so responsive. During the pandemic when other publishers were moving slowly, the Read Live team was proactively making the program easy for us to use. You are always thinking ahead-- constantly improving, adding new features, enhancing the student experience. The more I use the program, the happier I am. Thank you! I love Read Live! In the past, I have utilized Read Live before school to support students during our COVID Learning Loss morning tutoring. I have also utilized Read Live during Mustang U (our school's RTI Time). Currently, I utilize Read Live in my roles as Instructional Coach, Intervention Teacher, and SST Coordinator. The components of Read Live seamlessly work together to support the Science of Reading, as well as strategies to improve reading, comprehension, and writing for all students. Our Special Education/SAI Department incorporates Read Live into their SAI Sessions with students to assist students in strengthening their current reading abilities and work towards their IEP Goals. In my Intervention Classes, I have seen many students gain great ground (grade levels) in Reading and no long have the need to attend Intervention. This year, the ESOL team at my school decided to use this program as a way to teach students new vocabulary, reading skills and comprehension to ELLs and it worked so amazing. Each story is non-fiction so they can be used interchangeably with kids in both younger and older grades. This helped us to work together as a team to help students to grow in their understanding of vocabulary across all grade levels. I also love that the stories are printable so that in small groups we can really highlight through stories and simultaneously work with students on searching for text-based evidence. Our students vocabulary, reading fluency and skills, as well as comprehension skills have grown so much this year with the help of this program! I look forward to using it in the years to come with students. Reply Melissa Mar 11, 2025

I am huge fan of Read Naturally! I have used Read Naturally/Read Live for 16 years and cannot emphasize enough what a wonderful program it is for reading instruction for special needs students. The progress that made in my Resource Room is remarkable! Year after year, my students buy-in to Read Naturally because they feel successful in an area that they have traditionally struggled with for years. They become self-motivated to become stronger readers because they sense their own learning, in some cases for the first time ever. It is truly wonderful to witness! I'm interested to explore more of what this program has to offer. After exploring your website, it seems like you guys have a lot of good progress monitoring tools and data tracking. One of the data tracking pages I got from your site was to do the hot and cold reads, it's been a good help with keeping my students engaged in their progress and areas to grow in.

I tutored a student with reading disabilities and she was 3 years below her reading grade level. She did not like the hands-on, multisensory methods of other research-based reading programs, so I introduced her to Read Naturally's online reading program. Since she loves technology, I thought this would be a good fit. She not only liked the online learning and engaging lessons of Read Naturally, she LOVED it! In 6 months, she increased her reading level by two years because she enjoyed interacting with the program so frequently. Her parents were astounded! I highly recommend the online program for students who may not enjoy the structured literacy approach of other programs.

The suite of tools that Read Live offers are so instrumental in supporting students on their journeys to become proficient readers. We couple Word Warm Up Live with Read Live Sequenced Stories to allow students to build their accuracy, fluency, expression, & comprehension abilities while continuously strengthening fluency with decoding at the word level. At my last school site Read Live became an essential part of our strong K-3 Literacy program and the Read Live model we used has now spread to other campuses within that district. I, happily, took Read Live with me to my new district site where we are building our program from the ground up and already seeing success. I encourage all campuses to consider Read Live and its many tools as an element for your reading program. Helpful at all tiers of instruction, Read Live is a tool I won't live without as a reading specialist.

I love to use Read Naturally Live with my students in private practice. We work hard on phonics skills and then use the program to gain more fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The predictable format has been great for my dyslexic students as well. The students love the high interest stories and really enjoy when they hit their goals.

Our campus has been using Read Live for several years. We have seen measurable growth in student's reading fluency who use this program consistently. This is a great supplemental resource for extra practice or reading intervention that a wide range or readers can benefit from. Reply Annette Ivens Dec 9, 2024

My 8th grade Reading Itervention class adopted the Read Naturally Live program as a replacement to the mishegoss that HMH created by re-configuring their Read180 software program. I was hesitant at first to use the Read Live program, as rumoors that "it was used years ago" and "it just wasn't a good program". Not knowing if that was true or not, I signed up for the FREE 60 day "test-drive", and was pleasantly surpised at how easy it is the use, and how engaging and focused the material is. My students have been successful using it, constantly growing with each intervention period, and one of my students was actually selected as the Read Naturally's "Star of the Month" for December! Their customer support has been very helpful, and they have additional opportunities via live webinars or tape webinars (which I can view with a busy teaching schedule). The program is highly-affordable, and a great addition to my 8th grade classroom.

Michelle was a huge help in getting us back up and running as we have several new faces since first using Read Live and her level of patience was appreciated. We hope to watch other tutorials to best use the full spectrum of tools available and also connect our teaching staff to help the team support our EL students with language acquisition and comprehension along with fluency/accuracy.

The placement test was so easy to do! The personalized set-up meeting was great. The coach was patient with me as I navigated the pages. I am not tech savvy, so I appreciate the extra help & the patience while I worked. I used RN in the past when it was only on paper. The computerized version will be so much easier. Most of my students were surprised to find they placed at higher reading level than where they thought. I am looking forward to using this program with my students. They enjoy seeing their progress & getting immediate feedback. Reply Jennifer K. Oct 24, 2024

Read Naturally Live is an excellent program for developing reading fluency. I have used it for over 10 years as a station in my support setting. The program provides a visual representation of how practice affects their reading rate. Additionally, the comprehension questions help me identify the specific skills that require direct instruction. I would highly recommend it as part of a robust reading program. Also, the customer service is phenomenal. Christy has been so accommodating and responsive. I am so appreciative of the whole team.

We've been using Read Naturally Live for 3 years in our intervention program and have seen amazing growth in our struggling readers. The program is designed to be easily accessable to students and teachers, while having depth and breadth of instruction to keep students challenged as they grow in oral reading and comprehension. Our program has "graduated" many students back to their regular classroom as they reached grade-level fluency. Read Naturally Live is a wonderful tool to have in your intervention tool kit!

My students thrive year after year with this program. I utilize a reward system to keep the motivation and excitement alive. My middle schoolers are seeing their progress and are proud of themselves and even clap for their friends when they achieve goals. If you fire it up before launching it and utilize the training videos for yourself and for your students (as a class), you will love it too! Keep it alive and it'll happen

The nonfiction sequential texts in Read Live are generally very engaging, especially the ones about animals and strange historical events like the Molasses Flood. The students get a chance to see what a fluent reading pace sounds like and then can improve their reading pace significantly on their hot-timings--seeing how much their score improves is very motivating for them. Overall, I'm seeing at least a 30-word improvement per minute over the course of the year. I only see my students 3x per week for 15 minutes each session, so they've been able to do about 12 stories -- two are still in the same grade level they started in. With more time each week, I'm sure they'd improve even more. Read Live hits key strands of reading -- vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension, and fluency. Students can work on vocabulary while they wait for the teacher to do their hot timing, they can go back and redo parts of the assessment before passing, and I can differentiate easily for each student. My students all enjoy coming to me and working hard in Read Live to meet or exceed their goals.

The articles are high-interest - the kids talk and compare what they have read. They love the student choice as well. The fact that it is leveled helps so much for the various strengths of our kids. Our district has been using Read Live for quite awhile. We first started with the paper copies and have been very please with the transition to the online version. I can confidently say that it is an outstanding tool for building reading fluency with students. The program is user friendly for both students and teachers. The students are able to work independently on enhancing their reading skills and then confirm their progress by directly working with their teacher. This aids in classroom management as well. The teacher can pull small groups while confidently knowing that their students on Read Live are actively engaged working on their IEP goals. The teacher can then switch which students are in their small group. Read Live makes data tracking easy for teachers. This data can be used to inform instruction and ensure that students are making progress. The reports have been a great tool to help students and teachers know how they are performing. Overall, we highly recommend Read Live!

I teach 7th and 8th grade students who are reluctant readers and have difficulty with grade-level materials. They are using ReadLive passages at their level as a supplement to a structured literacy program, and are making great progress. The stories are high interest non-fiction, so not only are they expanding their knowledge base and becoming smarter, but they are also enjoying themselves. Their fluency has improved so much with the focus on reading in phrases and repeated practice. I almost cried when one of the 'cool' kids told another student, "just do it, it works!" The visuaI graph for cold/hot reading scores gives them immediate feedback as well, always a plus and great to use for data collection to report to parents and teachers. I am so proud of my students and love the program!
