This mostly independent reading program supports native Spanish speakers to develop their Spanish reading fluency while developing general reading skills with Spanish texts. The program may be used with Spanish-speaking students before or while a student learns to read in English. Read Naturally Live—Español is a Spanish version of Read Naturally Live that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. Text and audio (completely in Spanish) guide the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks student progress.

pointerRead Naturally Live—Español Rationale and Research

Read Naturally Live StepsRead Naturally Live Steps
  1. Select a Story (Seleccione una Lectura)
The student clicks on the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.
  2. Key Words (Palabras Claves)
The student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story.
  3. Prediction (Predicción)
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story.
  4.  Cold Timing (Primer Intento)
The teacher may time the student for one minute as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student clicks unknown words while reading, and then clicks the last word read during the timing. Read Naturally Live subtracts the unknown words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score and displays the score on a graph. This step establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  5. Read Along (Leer Juntos)
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  6. Practice (Práctica)
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  7. Quiz (Prueba)
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story.
  8. Retell (Volver a Contar)
The student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension.
  9. Pass (Aprobar)
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects the comprehension questions and the retelling of the story (if applicable) and reviews the results with the student.

Additional graphs show results for the comprehension questions, and the retelling (if applicable).

I am reading specialist at an Elementary School. We have had the paper version of Read Live but I found it clunky and difficult to manage. I convinced my Principal to purchase the online version last school and piloted it for our district. The reading scores increased substantially. It was so exciting to see. I shared the results with our Curriculum Director and she was just as excited. As a result she purchased the program for our entire district. Thank you!

I pull small groups out for 1st thru 3rd grade to help with phonemic awareness and reading/writing. I love that we can go at a faster pace through letters or sounds they know, and slow down and work on those that need more practice.

The writing of letters practice is a very nice addition, especially for 1st grade.

Read Live has really increased my students confidence in reading. I love every aspect of it and how it shows progress. Giving the students that advantage to see how their growth in reading has increased, really gives them that motivation to read more and more. Great phonics!!

My name is Shelly Burks, I am an interventionist at Naas Elementary in Boring Oregon. I use the Read Live program with several groups of students ranging from 2nd to 5th grade. I just love this program! I am seeing great improvement in fluency, accuracy and comprehension. I love that I can have several students in the same group and they can all be working at different levels. The students also enjoy this program. They can't wait to sit down and start a new story. The stories are high interest stories that keep students engaged and thinking about their reading. I also have just started using the Data Mentor, I find it helpful.

Read Live has been an excellent resource for my reading intervention for 5th and 6th-grade students. Students are amazed when they do their "Hot Timing" and exceed their goal. With large groups in my classroom, the reading intervention was slow and difficult to differentiate until Read Naturally Live's program came to us. I have students do graphic organizers for non-fiction texts with each text they read and their comprehension levels are growing every day. Having the report information gives me an easy way to show parents and other staff how the student is excelling or struggling and exactly where we need to assist each student. I recommend Reading Live to any reading intervention teacher.

As a reading specialist (K-5), Read Live has been my favorite online learning platform hands-down. I love that I can adjust the programs and settings for each individual student. Some students use all three options (Read Live, One-Minute Reader, and Word Warm-Ups), while other students use either one or two, depending on their specific and individualized goals. I also love the progress monitoring tools that help me, as well as my students, see their progress as well as areas to strengthen. Read Live has improved my students’ reading fluency, stamina, and ability to answer questions - both in written response as well as multiple-choice. The kids love it too! My students love that they are able to choose the stories they read. They find the nonfiction stories engaging, and not so lengthy as to seem intimidating. Many of my students have expressed that they feel more successful with the Read Naturally stories then they do with other reading materials in school. In fact, several of my students have requested their login information so that they can use the platform at home. Nothing can make me happier than when kids are asking to read at home!

Read Live has helped my students to become more fluent readers at a very rapid rate of growth! I'm always so excited to share with their families that the growth is so high! It also is helping some of my other students who are working on the importance of comprehending what they read. This program is a great fit for some of my students during their IEP intervention time.

I absolutely love using the Read Naturally Live programs with my middle school special education students! I first used RNL approximately 10 years ago and have transitioned to 3 different schools since then. In each new school I was able to advocate for the use of Read Naturally Live for my students and was able to provide data to my administrators to demonstrate its effectiveness and gained their support to purchase the subscriptions for my students. I have found it to be extremely effective in a resource room setting where most of my students are on different instructional reading levels. This program is geared towards their individual needs and enables students to work at their own level to make significant gains. Every year that I have used this program I have had struggling readers make significant progress with some gaining 2+ years. This program works because it is based upon the Science of Reading and utilizes research-based, best practices reading instruction!

I teach kids who are a little anxious while reading because English is a second language for them. At first they would not want to read aloud and now they look forward to reading to me, look up a glossary to know the meanings of difficult words and even challenge each other on their synonym and antonym scores. My students love it and i keep recommending the program to my fellow Interventionists!

Read live has been a great asset to our school and tom the ELAR department. It has bridged a gap between kids with learning disabilities and kids that struggle with fluency. Some of the students that use this program are our Spanish speaking students they are able to have the story red to them and it is helping them understand and speak English better.

As a Middle/High school Special Education teacher it is challenging to find materials that are high interest/controlled vocabulary. Read Live does a great job with this and also prepares my students for the content vocabulary they will need in science and social studies classes. I appreciate the comprehension questions and the opportunity to insist that the students respond in complete sentences, use the vocabulary and develop a paragraph summary. It hits all the language arts marks for my kids when I use it thoroughly. I also love that I have detailed documentation of progress in a wide variety of language arts skills areas immediately! Thank you for continuing to develop this program online!!!

Read Live has helped my beginning and struggling readers access the Word Work activities successfully by having audio options on the page. This helps the older students navigate the site independently and they feel good about themselves when they complete an activity. My students are loving the stories as well and like the challenge of a timed read! Such a great program, I'm so glad our district purchased the licenses for us!

I have recently added Read Live to my small group instruction for some of my struggling readers. I have seen their fluency scores increase even though we have only been using the program for a short time. The students love to challenge themselves and beat their cold timing scores. I love how this program not only boost scores, but also build confidence in my students!
