How Signs for Sounds Addresses Common Core Standards

Read Naturally's Signs for Sounds is well-suited to support core reading programs and address the Foundational Skills and Language Anchor Standards as described below.

FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS

Phonological Awareness

Standard: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

Signs for Sounds lessons introduce sounds to develop phonemic awareness. Students isolate and segment sounds in spoken words.

Phonics and Word Recognition

Standard: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words.

Signs for Sounds lessons teach phonics through spelling. The lessons develop spelling-sound correspondences for decoding and spelling words with regular phonetic spelling patterns. The lessons teach and review high-frequency words with both regular and irregular spelling patterns. Students apply skills by writing dictation sentences.

LANGUAGE STANDARDS

Conventions of Standard English

Standard: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Each Signs for Sounds lesson includes opportunities for writing sentences and for spelling untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.
