Word Warm-ups: Communicating with students and parents/guardians

Communicating with students and parents/guardians is an important teacher responsibility. In addition to promoting parental support and addressing parents' and guardians' questions and concerns, communication fosters a sense of teamwork.

When a student begins working in Word Warm-ups, it is helpful to send home a letter that explains the program so that parents/guardians are involved from the beginning. A blackline master of this letter is available in the appendixes of the Word Warm-ups Teacher's Manuals.

You can keep parents/guardians involved by sending home a packet of exercises each time a student completes a section. You can use the Super Word Reader Award as a cover letter and include comments about the student's progress. You can also send home the student's graph when he or she has finished a Word Warm-ups level to provide visual proof of the student's gains.

When a student is making gains, it is important to communicate this success to both the student and his or her parents/guardians. Sharing this success can be very motivating for the student.
