Dolch Sight Words (Six Levels)

Players accumulate cards by saying the sight words on the cards they turn over. But watch out! The Word Thief could steal the words they've earned! The six Word Thief games are leveled (PrePrimer to third) and can be played by level or mixed to create a customized game to target words that students need to master.

Students should play this game with a proficient reader (parent, teacher, or peer) who can subtly correct errors and provide the word or phrase again when a student struggles.

  1. Before playing, decide how many Word Thief and Stop cards to include. Varying the number makes it more exciting for the players.
  2. Shuffle the cards and place the deck face down.
  3. The first player takes a card, reads the word or phrase on the card aloud, and then keeps the card. The player continues to take cards and read the words or phrases until one of the following occurs:
    • The player decides to stop. He or she keeps all cards earned during that turn.
    • The player turns over a Stop card. His or her turn is over, but he or she keeps all cards earned during that turn.
    • Player turns over a Word Thief card. His turn is over, and he must return all cards earned during that turn to a discard pile.
  4. Play continues until all of the cards in the deck have been read. The player with the most cards wins.

Includes six decks of cards, one each for the preprimer, primer, first, second, third, and phrases levels.

Each Word Thief card deck includes:

  • 50 or more durable playing cards (3.5 by 2.5 inches/89 by 63.5 mm), printed in rich color on top-grade card stock
  • Clear plastic case
  • Instruction card

My students are absolutely loving the Word Thief games!!! Their enthusiasm is amazing because I work with struggling readers who are two and three years behind their peers in reading. Please introduce more games that allow me to engage students in reading without the tedium of the flash card drill-and-kill routine.
