SE v2.1: Update fixes "Can't connect to MySQL server" error on Mac OS X clients

Client Operating System: 

Mac OS 10.10.x (Yosemite) and later

SE Versions:

SE v2.1.4 Network Plus


The client application does not connect to the server and the message “Can’t connect to MySQL server on <server-IP-address> (60)” displays, even though the server IP address is correct, and other computers running Mac OS 10.9 and lower are able to connect to the server.


Replace the rnse_np and the rn_splash applications on all SE client workstations running OS 10.10.x and later by performing these steps:

  1. Click the following link to download the rnse_np.dmg file:

    pointer rnse_np.dmg

  2. After downloading, launch the rnse_np.dmg file to extract the rnse_np and rnse_splash files.
  3. In the resulting window, drag the rnse_np and rnse_splash icons into the Read Naturally Client icon, and confirm that you want to replace the existing files.
  4. Launch the Read Naturally client to verify that you can now connect to the SE server.
Alternate Solution:

​If you have Apple Remote Desktop or another mechanism for distributing software at your site, you can download and extract the replacement files and then copy them to the HDD/Applications/Read Naturally Client folder on each of the SE client computers. Contact the tech department at your school for help with this method.
