SE v2.0: Manually completing a Windows server installation

(463 Views)

If the installation of the SE server software fails before completing successfully, you can complete the installation manually as described below.

To complete the server installation manually on a Windows computer:
  1. Make sure the installation has finished as far as it will go (up to the point of the database error), and then close the installation program.
  2. Open the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ReadNaturally. (If you do not see the Application Data folder, select Folder Options from the Tools menu, select the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders under Advanced Settings, and click OK.) There should be a file named RNSEServerPrefs in the folder, but because the installation failed, it is probably missing.
  3. Create an RNSEServerPrefs file by performing these steps:

    1. Using Notepad, create a blank file and type the following text in the file:

      [Location]
      Path=<pathToRNSEServer>

      where <pathTo RNSEServer> is the actual path to the RNSEServer folder on your Windows server (the default path is C:/Program Files/RNSEServer). Be sure to use forward slashes (not backslashes) as shown here.
    2. Save the file with the name RNSEServerPrefs (no file extension) in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ReadNaturally folder.

  4. Create a SrvrConfig file by performing these steps:

    1. Using Notepad, create a blank file and type the following text on the first line of the file:

      ServerIP=<x.x.x.x.>

      where <x.x.x.x> is the actual IP address of the computer hosting the SE server software.
    2. Save the file with the name SrvrConfig (no file extension) in the RNSE_Client_Install folder. (The default path is C:\Program Files\RNSEServer\RNSE_Client_Install.)
    3. Close Notepad.

  5. Register the RNSEServer service by performing these steps:

    1. Open a Command Prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
    2. Open the folder where the RNSEServer.exe file is located. (The default location is C:\Program Files\RNSEServer\RNSEServer.)
    3. Drag the RNSEServer.exe file from RNSEServer folder onto the Command Prompt window (this auto fills the path). At the end of the command line add a space, type –r, and press Enter. This unregisters the service as a precaution.
    4. Drag the RNSEServer.exe file from RNSEServer folder onto the Command Prompt window (this auto fills the path). At the end of the command line add a space, type –i, and press Enter. This registers the service.
    5. Drag the RNSEServer.exe file from RNSEServer folder onto the Command Prompt window (this auto fills the path). At the end of the command line add a space, type –s, and press Enter. This starts the service.

  6. Because the license numbers were not successfully added to the database, you must re-enter the license numbers as follows:

    1. Insert the SE 2 Network Software Installation CD into the computer's CD drive.
    2. Open the installation CD (RNSE2_Install_SE) and then double-click the RNServerInstall_Win.exe icon.
    3. Click Add Level, and add the license numbers for the levels you purchased.

  7. Copy the story files from the level CDs to the server computer, either by using the FileCopy utility (see the SE 2 Software Guide for details) or by copying the files manually as follows:

    1. Insert one of the level CDs into the computer's CD drive.
    2. Open the level CD (rnse2cd), and then open the /StoryFiles/<level> folder, where <level> is the level number of the stories on the CD.
    3. Copy the Level<n.n>.vdb file from the <level> folder of the CD to the Databases folder on the computer. (The default path is C:/Program Files/RNSEServer/RNSEServer/Databases.)
    4. Repeat step 7 for the other level CDs.
