Downloading the Update and Installation Instructions

SE Stand-Alone | SE Network Plus | Content Updates | Windows MSI File | Title Bar Fix

There are different SE 2.1.4 update files for the different operating systems and installation types. It is important that you download and install the correct version for your system.

To determine whether you have a Stand-Alone or Network Plus installation:

  1. Double-click the Read Naturally icon to display the Read Naturally login screen.
  2. Look up the Read Naturally version:
    • For Windows, choose About Read Naturally from the Help menu.
    • For Macintosh, choose About Read Naturally from the Read Naturally SE menu.
  3. After the version number, "Stand-Alone" indicates that you have a stand-alone installation, and "District" or "School" indicates that you have a Network Plus installation.

The following tables specify which installation instructions and installation file apply to each operating system and installation type.

SE Network Plus Updates

To update SE Network Plus installations, download the server update file to the computer that is hosting the SE server software. This server update file includes files for updating the SE server software and files for applying the SE 2.1.4 update to SE clients. Each client workstation must connect to the server in order to run the update.

Note: When you apply the server updates, the SE server software restarts. Therefore, users should not be using Read Naturally SE when you update the server.

MSI File for Windows Installer

If you use Windows Installer to install Read Naturally SE client software on Windows workstations, also download the following SE 2.1.4 MSI file: InstallWkstn_win214.msi

Note: This file is intended for new client installations only. It cannot update existing v2.1.x installations. It also cannot remove any v2.0.x client installations, but it will install new clients alongside them. You should uninstall the old v2.0.x clients after installing the new clients from this MSI file in order to avoid confusing end users.

The MSI client installer cannot set the IP address of the Read Naturally server as the traditional client installer can. So when you launch the client after an MSI installation, you will be prompted to enter the IP address of the computer acting as the SE server. As an alternative to going through this process on each client workstation, you could set up the IP address for one client workstation and then copy the preferences file, RNSEPrefs_np, from that workstation to all of the other client workstations. The following table specifies the location of the preferences file for different versions of the Windows operating system:

Windows Version Location of the Preferences File
Windows 7 C:\Program Data\ReadNaturally\RNSEPrefs_np
Windows Vista C:\Users\Public\Documents\ReadNaturally\RNSEPrefs_np
Windows XP, 2003, 2000, and NT C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ReadNaturally \RNSEPrefs_np
Note: Application Data is normally a hidden folder.
Windows Millenium Edition and 98 Second Edition C:\Windows\ReadNaturally\RNSEPrefs_np

If you have the district version of Read Naturally SE, you may need to correct the school name by logging into the program as the administrator, choosing the School tab, and then clicking Change. You could also just log in as an administrator after a clean installation at one of other schools, manually change the school name, and then copy that preferences file to the other client computers at the school.

Title Bar Fix (Windows Installations)

An additional free update is available for installations of Read Naturally SE v2.1.4 (Network Plus and Stand-Alone) on Windows computers. Without this update, after a student progresses one or more steps, the title bar in the Read Naturally window stops displaying the student's name and the title of the story they are working on.
