New database utilities for SE v2.1 network installations hosted on Mac OS 10.7.x (Lion) servers
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.7.x or higher
SE Versions: SE v2.1.x Network Plus
Problem:
The rnse_DBUtilities program for Read Naturally SE v2.1.x is a PowerPC application to accommodate importing data from earlier versions of Read Naturally SE. If you install the Read Naturally SE v2.1.x server software on a Mac OS 10.7 operating system, then this program will not work—Mac OS 10.7 no longer supports PowerPC applications.
Solution:
You will need to download this updated version of the rnse_DBUtilities program:
- For Read Naturally SE v2.1.x School Server software: rnse_DBUtilities_s.dmg
- For Read Naturally SE v2.1.x District Server software: rnse_DBUtilities_d.dmg
After extracting the DMG file on the Mac OS 10.7 server, drag the utility to the Applications folder icon, and it will automatically place the utility in the following folder:
<Hard Drive>/Applications/RNSEServerNetPlus/RNSEServer
Once this program is installed, log in to it with your Read Naturally SE administrator password, and immediately use it to create a backup of your Read Naturally database. This does not interrupt service, but it is recommended that you do this when no one is using the program. We also strongly recommend that you set up automatic backups using the Scheduled Backup feature. You can do this at any time, whether or not others are using the program.
Note: If you do not know the password, then run the AdminPassword utility, located in the same folder as the database utilities:
<Hard Drive>/Applications/RNSEServerNetPlus/RNSEServer
Note: It if fairly common for the resulting backup files to be less than 1 MB in size. Make sure that the backup files are 4 KB or larger to ensure that the backup was successful.
Important: If you are upgrading from Read Naturally SE v1.x or v2.0.x to Read Naturally SE v2.1.x and you wish to retain your data, you will need to contact Read Naturally Technical Support so that they can migrate your data for you. The import feature has been removed from this new database utilities in order to make it compatible with Mac OS 10.7. Please do not uninstall your Read Naturally SE v1.x or v2.0.x software until after working with Read Naturally to migrate your data from a backup file.
- To back up your data in SE v2.0.3, use the SE v2.0.3 database utilities (rnse_DBUtilities).
- To back up your data in SE v1.x, log in to the Teacher Management program, and then choose Quit from the File menu. You should then be prompted to back up your data. Click Yes to start the backup process. Since SE v1.x is no longer supported, we cannot guarantee being able to successfully import SE v1.x data into SE v2.1.x.
Please submit a Support Request to request assistance with importing your SE v1.0.x or v2.0.x data into v2.1.x.

Note: You may also want to consider transitioning to Read Live, a web-based version of the Read Naturally software. Because Read Live is web-based, it can avoid many operating system compatibility issues.
