SE locks up

If SE locks up, in most cases it is due to conflicts with the media player used to play the MP3 audio files of the individual words.

Macintosh Computers
If you have a Macintosh computer, make sure that QuickTime is updated to the latest version available for the Mac OS installed on the workstation. When this topic was written, the most current versions of QuickTime available were v7.1.3 for Mac OS X and v6.0.3 for Mac OS 9. Do not use the iTunes version of QuickTime, as it has been known to cause problems.

Windows Computers
If you have a Windows computer, you can use the Windows Media Player, which is included with Windows. However, you should also check to see if QuickTime is installed on your computer—sometimes the two media players can conflict with each other. If you do have QuickTime, first check to make it is latest version available. When this topic was written, the most current versions of QuickTime available were v7.1.3 (without iTunes) for Windows 2000 and XP, and v6.5.2 for Windows 98.

If you have the latest version of QuickTime available and you still have problems with SE locking up, you may have to remove QuickTime completely. Try uninstalling QuickTime from a couple of computers to test whether this takes care of the problem. If SE still locks up, check to make sure Windows Media Player is updated and also that it is set up to play MP3 files. (Choose Options from the Tools menu, choose the File Types tab, and make sure the box for MP3 audio file is checked.)

If SE still locks up, try re-installing the latest version of QuickTime and then change the settings for Windows Media Player so that it will not play MP3 files. (Choose Options from the Tools menu, choose the File Types tab, and uncheck the box for MP3 audio file.)
