Unable to locate story files for level x.x

Operating System: Windows or Mac OS

SE Version: SE 2.0.x

Symptoms: When you try to log in as a student, the following message displays: "Unable to locate story files for level x.x".

Probable Cause: This message indicates one of two things:

  • In a network installation, it indicates that the story database file (file name ending in .vdb) has not been copied from the level CD to the server.
  • In a standalone installation, if you have two CD-ROM drives, this error can occur if the drive with the level CD in it is not the one that SE is trying to read. This error can also occur if the CD-ROM drive is assigned a drive letter other than D:.

Solution for a Network Installation with a Windows Server:
Manually copy the stories from the level CD to the Windows server by performing these steps:

  1. Insert a level CD into the CD-ROM drive of the server.
  2. Browse to the \Story Files\<level> folder on the CD.
  3. Copy the <level>.vdb file to the \Program Files\RNSEServer\RNSEServer\Databases folder on the server.

Solution for a Network Installation with a Mac OS X Server:
Manually copy the stories from the level CD to the Mac OS X server by performing these steps:

  1. Insert a level CD into the CD drive of the server.
  2. When the rnse2cd icon appears on the desktop, double-click it to open it.
  3. Open the StoryFiles folder, and then open the <level> folder.
  4. Copy the <level>.vdb file to the /Library/RNSEServer/Database folder on the hard drive of the server.

Solution for Standalone Installations (Windows and Macintosh):
If you have two CD-ROM drives, try inserting the level CD into the other CD-ROM drive, and then try logging in as a student again. If the CD-ROM drive is assigned a drive letter other than D:, you must change the drive letter designation in the RNSEPrefs file by performing these steps:

  1. Open the folder containing the RNSE Prefs folder:
    • On Windows 2000 and XP computers, the RNSEPrefs file is in the following folder:
      My Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ReadNaturally
. (If you do not see the Application Data folder, select Folder Options from the Tools menu, select the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders under Advanced Settings, and click OK.)
    • On Windows 98SE and ME computers, the RNSEPrefs file is in the following folder:
      My Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Windows\Temp \ReadNaturally
  2. As a precaution, make a copy of the RNSEPrefs file before you continue.
    1. Right-click RNSEPrefs and select Copy.
    2. Go to the desktop of your computer, right-click in an empty area, and select Paste.
  3. Open the original RNSEPrefs file (located in the ReadNaturally folder) with Notepad. (Right-click the file, choose Open, select Notepad, and click OK.)
  4. Locate the following information in the RNSEPrefs file:

    [Stories]
    Path=D:/StoryFiles (or Path=False:/StoryFiles)

  5. Change D: (or False:) to the drive letter assigned to the CD drive on your computer (for example, E:).
  6. Save and close the RNSEPrefs file.
