How to complete an SE 2 server installation manually on Mac OS X computers
If the installation of the SE server software fails before completing successfully, you can complete the installation manually as described below.
To complete the server installation manually on a Mac OS X computer:
- Make sure the installation has finished as far as it will go (up to the point of the database error), and then close the installation program.
- Open the folder Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/ReadNaturally. There should be a file named RNSEServerPrefs in the folder, but because the installation failed, it is probably missing.
- Create an RNSEServerPrefs file by performing these steps:
- Using the TextEdit application, create a blank file and make sure the format is plain text. (Choose Make Plain Text from the Format menu if necessary.)
- Type the following text in the file:
[Location]
Path=<pathToRNSEServer>
where <pathTo RNSEServer> is the actual path to the RNSEServer folder on your Mac OS server (the default path is Macintosh HD/Applications/RNSEServer). - Save the file with the name RNSEServerPrefs (no file extension) in the Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/ReadNaturally folder.
- Create a SrvrConfig file by performing these steps:
- Using TextEdit, create a blank file and make sure the format is plain text.
- Type the following text on the first line of the file:
ServerIP=<x.x.x.x.>
where <x.x.x.x> is the actual IP address of the computer hosting the SE server software. - Save the file with the name SrvrConfig (no file extension) in the Macintosh HD/Applications/RNSEServer/RNSE_Client_Install folder.
- Close TextEdit.
- Copy the SE server start-up items to the computer by performing these steps:
- Insert the SE 2 Network Software Installation CD into the computer's CD drive.
- Open the installation CD (RNSE2_Install_SE) and then open the StartupItems folder.
- Copy the entire RNSEServer folder from the StartupItems folder on the CD to the /Library/StartupItems folder on the Macintosh hard drive.
- Start the RNSEServer process either by rebooting the server computer or by using a terminal window as follows:
- Open a terminal window (open the folder Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities and double-click Terminal).
- Open the folder Macintosh HD/Library/RNSEServer.
- Drag the RNSEServer executable file from Macintosh HD/Library/RNSEServer onto the terminal window (this auto fills the path).
- Make sure there is a trailing space after the last character and then type & and press Enter.
- To close the terminal window, type exit and press Enter. The RNSEServer process will stay running.
- Because the license numbers were not successfully added to the database, you must re-enter the license numbers as follows:
- Insert the SE 2 Network Software Installation CD into the computer's CD drive.
- Open the installation CD (RNSE2_Install_SE) and then double-click the RNServerInstall_Mac icon.
- Click Add Level, and add the license numbers for the levels you purchased.
- Copy the story files from the level CDs to the server computer, either by using the FileCopy utility (see the SE 2 Software Guide for details) or by copying the files manually as follows:
- Insert one of the level CDs into the computer's CD drive.
- Open the level CD (rnse2cd), and then open the /StoryFiles/<level> folder, where <level> is the level number of the stories on the CD.
- Copy the Level<n.n>.vdb file from the <level> folder of the CD to the Macintosh HD/Library/RNSEServer/Databases folder on the computer.
- Repeat step 8 for the other level CDs.
