Apple Xserve and Mac OS X Permission Requirements for RFBA Server

To avoid RFBA installation problems on Apple Xserve and Mac OS X (10.2 or higher), you should make sure that ownership and permissions are set properly for the folders where the RFBA server components are installed.

IMPORTANT: Only the owner of a folder can change the permissions for it. So the owner of a folder (in this case, the folders for RFBA) must be logged in in order to set the correct permissions.
 
Ways to Set Permissions in Mac OS X

Get Info
The easiest way to set permissions in Mac OS X is to use the Get Info command.

  1. Hold down the Control key and click the folder for which you want to set permissions.
  2. Choose Get Info from the pop-up menu.
  3. Expand Ownership & Permissions, set the permissions as described below, and click Apply to enclosed items.

chmod
Sometimes the Get Info command may not work if, for example, you have made several attempts to change permissions on a folder and its contents using different logins. If this is the case, you could open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and use the chmod command (change mode, a UNIX command) to view and edit permissions. BatChmod
We have also found that a GUI shareware utility called BatChmod can be quite effective in resolving permission problems.

  1. Download BatChmod and install it on your system.
  2. Check the owners and groups to make sure they match the table below.
  3. Check the boxes for the permissions (R, W, X) to make sure they match the table below.
  4. Check the box for Apply ownership and privileges.
  5. Click Apply. When prompted, enter the user name and password for an administrator of the computer.
Permission Requirements for the Mac OS X Server

Before you install the RFBA network software, be sure to check the permissions set for the parent directories listed below. Be sure that the account you are using to install RFBA has the appropriate permissions.  The following table shows how the permissions should be set up after the software is installed.

Checking Permissions on the Mac OS Workstations

You may also need to check the ownership and permissions of the RFBA application on the Mac OS workstations.

  1. Hold down the Control key and click the executable file: /Applications/Read Naturally SE 2/rfba
  2. Choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. You will see several files and folders inside the Contents folder.
  3. Check the ownership and permissions of the files and folders in the Contents folders to make sure they are set correctly.
