Word Warm-ups
Word Warm-ups is a quick, timed, and independent program for developing mastery and automaticity in the decoding of words with common phonics and syllable patterns and words that contain the most common prefixes and suffixes.
Three Word Warm-ups programs are available:
- Word Warm-ups 1 supports students in learning to read phonetically decodable, one-syllable words automatically.
- Word Warm-ups 2 supports students in reviewing common phonics patterns using compound words, learning to read words with two-syllable word patterns, and learning to read some three-syllable words with the most common prefixes and suffixes.
- Word Warm-ups 3 supports students in learning to automatically recognize common prefixes and suffixes, determine how to pronounce open and closed syllables, and read multisyllabic words.
How It Works
Students work independently, for as little as 10 minutes a day, on short, audio-supported exercises to increase their phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding skills.
Students first listen to instruction about a common phonics or syllable pattern. Next, students do a one-minute “cold timing.” Students read along with audio support and then time themselves as they practice word lists. Finally, the teacher monitors “hot timings” to see if students can read down and across the word lists in one minute.
Students graph their results, which shows their progress and motivates them to keep improving.
What's Included
Exercise Books & Audio CDs
An exercise book contains reproducible exercises grouped into sections, with each section focusing on a specific letter sound, phonics pattern, or syllable pattern.
Audio CDs
Six sets of audio CDs provide audio support for the exercises (CD storage case included).
Teacher’s Manual
The teacher’s manual explains the program
in detail and includes blackline masters for parent letters, mini-folders, student graphs, assessment scoring worksheets, data recording sheets, the step poster, and award certificates.
