This time-tested intervention program engages students with interesting nonfiction stories and yields powerful results.

Read Naturally Encore II provides...

  • Intensive reading intervention, often used for RTI or MTSS implementations.
  • Differentiated instruction for a wide range of readers from beginning readers to adults.
  • Motivating informational text for reluctant readers.
  • Feedback to students and teachers through graphs of individual progress.
  • Nonfiction reading opportunities as required by state standards.
  • A process to correctly place and continually challenge each student.
  • Spanish audio translations of the read-along step in early Sequenced levels.
  • In the Español series, a complete Spanish translation of the Sequenced series.

Students...

  • Build fluency while expanding knowledge base.
  • Increase reading accuracy and expression with audio support.
  • Strengthen comprehension and vocabulary.
  • Develop automaticity in decoding (Phonics series).
  • Work independently most of the time.
  • Experience success and an improved attitude toward reading.

Read Naturally Encore II accelerates reading achievement by combining three research-based reading strategies for struggling readers—teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. The student works through the steps and masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The student tracks progress on a graph.

pointer Research basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

The Encore reading fluency intervention develops reading proficiency using nonfiction reading passages and audio CDs

Read Naturally Encore II Steps
  1. Select a Story
The student selects the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.
  2. Key Words
In the Sequenced series, the student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story.
In the Phonics series, the student listens to a phonics lesson and reads words that have the featured phonics patterns.
  3. Prediction
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story.
  4. Cold Timing
The teacher may time the student, usually for one minute, as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student underlines unknown words while reading. At the end of the timing, the student subtracts the number of underlined words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score. This step raises the student’s awareness of which words he or she needs to learn and establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  5. Graph Cold-Timing Score
The student graphs the cold-timing score in blue. Marking the graph provides a visual of the baseline data.
  6. Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  7. Practice
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  8. Questions
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story.
  9. Pass
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects or reviews the comprehension questions with the student.
  10. Graph Pass Scores
The student graphs the pass-timing score in red above the cold-timing score (in blue) to show how much the student’s fluency has improved. The student also graphs his or her comprehension scores.
  11. Retell/Word List
In the Sequenced series, the student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension, and the teacher corrects it.
In the Phonics series, the student works on decoding skills by practicing the word list until able to read it accurately at a predetermined rate. The teacher passes the student on the word list.
The student graphs his or her retelling or word list score.

I love the non-fiction text and the chance for students to read and digest the short text where deeper thinking skills are practiced before launching into a longer text. This material is great!!

Our district recently purchased additional Read Naturally materials, and I have been working with their customer service team. They are quick to respond and so helpful. I could not ask for a better experience.

I'm writing this review years after I first used Read Naturally with my reading center students. This program is STILL by far the best and most cost effective program I've found for assisting students with fluency. The fact that it is mostly student self-directed, is what really makes it effective for learning stations. I used and still recommend the Encore II Masters paper version because there was just something about my students keeping track of their own progress and creating their own graphs. As a teacher, my part was at the beginning and end of each passage when they told me they were ready to "test off" of the story and move on to the next. The comprehension questions, in my experience, are much more extensive than most other fluency programs. And the fact that kids aren't just stuck on a computer program without ever having their oral reading being listened to by a teacher is the wonderful. The students were always interested in the stories and gained a lot of content knowledge from the readings. This program works when done correctly! My students ALWAYS grew several grade levels within a years time by using this program only 10 minutes a day.

I love this program! I have used it for about 10 years now, in several schools. Students are interested in the stories and are so motivated by their progress charts. I am able to use this for some basic reading skills, (I use some of the phonics stories), fluency, comprehension, and I teach writing around the stories. It is easy to implement and I can easily monitor student progress. Thank you!

Our district has been using Read Naturally for years and we love it! Our teachers use passages as intervention tools for fluency and comprehension (grade levels 1-8) and have seen amazing results. The best part about this company is that if I ever have questions regarding the level kits or need any supplemental materials, I always receive a rapid response (through emails and/or phone calls). As a teacher who has 10-15 minutes between classes, this is a game-changer.

This program has been game changing (dare I say life changing?!) for my son. He has struggled with reading all the way through fourth grade when I finally had him assessed. Dyslexia was the diagnosis and I was told that he likely would never be a strong reader. He tested at a first grade reading level despite years of intensive one-on-one teaching. That was the last month of fourth grade. We started Read Naturally at the beginning of his fifth grade year. We are three months into the school year and his reading has improved two grade levels! Just as important, his confidence level and resulting attitude toward reading is so much better. This program is EASY for parent and students alike and it WORKS! I am so grateful that we found Read Naturally. I do believe it is having a life changing impact on my son.

The Read Naturally Encore program has proven to be an excellent intervention for our below level students and ESL students BUT, has also provided a way to accelerate our already on level readers. The students are engaged as they read the nonfiction passages and excited to graph and "OWN" their growth and achievement. They have gained confidence, vocabulary and interesting facts. It has encouraged them to find out more when they read about a topic and become curious. I began using Read Naturally ME many years ago and continue to love the program and the impact it has on all readers.

I have been an educator for nearly 3 decades in various roles, and have used Read Naturally as a part of reading intervention for many years. I am currently working with tutoring centers in Beijing China and have introduced this program. Read Naturally is a good match for 2nd language learners as it provides them with correct pronunciation and gives them the opportunity to improve their own pronunciation. Students love it, in addition to helping with correct pronunciation, RN works very well for reading fluency practice, vocabulary development, and writing practice. The educators here also love it because it is easy to implement and because they see results in students very quickly. They have commented that they are pleased with how motivated the students are and how happy they are to see progress made right before their eyes.

The program has greatly improved our students fluency and comprehension. The leveled program allows the students to practice successful reading on their own. The independence experienced by the students has been wonderful for their self-esteem. The vocabulary, predictions, and comprehension are also a big part of what makes the program a success. It is very easy to use and the students are highly engaged in the stories because they can choose what they are interested in reading. Also, the progress tracking graph is a huge incentive for success.

I worked as volunteer instructional aide in the reading department at Key Largo School. We used the original version of Read Naturally, currently known as Encore, and I could see how children not only enjoyed and enhanced their reading experience, but their handwritten work, involving the information received by following the words with their fingertips, tracing their comprehension answers, drawing the bar graph to evaluate themselves, made an unequally valuable connection, back and forth from hand through brain, that can hardly be replaced by the use of type-on computers. Other than the obvious pragmatic and trendy convenience, what does the Cloud and online programs offer to replace all those benefits offered by Read Naturally Encore?

Thank you for the high praise for Read Naturally Encore. I am glad you had such a rewarding experience using the program.

Read Naturally Live offers the following  student supports for reading that cannot be replicated with Encore unless you are working one-on-one with a student: all words in each story are pronounced correctly when a student clicks on them; students can see and hear the definition just by clicking on a vocabulary word; feedback on quiz answers is instantaneous (a very powerful instructional technique); scores are recorded instantly, and data is averaged so that a teacher can differentiate instruction easily.

While I agree that hand movements can help solidify student learning, the only one on your list that directly relates to learning to read is following text with a finger. Read Naturally cannot replicate this experience for the student on a computer, so a Reading Guide is available to outline a row of text. The student moves the Reading Guide with the mouse or the arrow keys, which provides a slightly different type of hand-eye-brain connection than using a finger under the text.

This is by far the best intervention program I have ever used in the classroom. The fact that much of it can be student driven and managed is a wonderful advantage of this program. Students get to practice their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, all with informational texts! The charting routine, in which the students chart their own success is a great way to hold them responsible and they love to see their own growth. My students read so much with this program, and at the end of each six weeks, I have a little Jeopardy game to show them how much they've actually learned with the multiple readings. They are always amazed at how much smarter they've gotten by using Read Naturally. One tip I'd give anyone using this version would be to buy timers that vibrate or flash a light so that you don't have to listen to the beeping all day long! I found some great ones for about 14$ each. This works so much better than iStation!

As a resource teacher, I have been using Encore for years with my struggling students. I love how it has helped my students improve in their reading comprehension, fluency, and writing! They enjoy competing with themselves to improve their fluency scores. I appreciate that the texts are engaging at all levels. Within one 45 minute period, we cover so much! I use the data I get weekly from this program to drive my instruction.

I use Read Naturally with my Middle School Resource kids. My students have gained confidence as they use this program. With confidence comes the desire to read more difficult passages. Not every student does well with a strictly phonics program. Read Naturally is the perfect fit for my students who need an additional method to build their reading skills.

I started using Read Naturally last year with one of my students and saw amazing results for her. Her fluency improvement was unbelievable and her confidence soared as she was able to become such a stronger reader. I am using it this year again with different students and am pleased with the results as well.

Read Naturally is the first program I've used that is truly comprehensive. The fluency component is excellent, but I am just as impressed with the vocabulary and comprehension components. Our students made tremendous gains after one year. I'm looking forward to using Read Naturally products again this year.
