Steps of the Read Naturally Program
The steps of the Read Naturally program apply the underlying principles of the strategy:
- To implement teacher modeling, students read along to a recording of a story. This teaches them correct pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
- To implement repeated reading, students practice reading the story several times until they can read it at their goal rate. This helps them master the words and phrases in the story.
- To implement progress monitoring, students graph their initial (cold timing) score and their final (pass timing or hot timing) score. Seeing their progress on each story and from story to story builds students confidence and motivates them to keep reading.
Other steps in the program are designed to build vocabulary (key words step) and promote comprehension (prediction, quiz, and retell steps).
The basic steps of the program are the same for the Masters Edition (ME), Software Edition (SE) version 1, SE version 2, and Group and Tutoring Edition (GATE), but there are also some differences. There are also differences in the levels that include phonics-building steps.
