Placing Students with the
SE 2.0 Placement Program

Read Naturally SE 2.0 includes a placement program that automates the process of placing students at an appropriate level and goal. You should use the placement program to test the student using stories from multiple levels. After testing the student, the program provides a reading level and goal recommendation based on the results.

The placement program's recommendations are only guidelines. You should select the goals and levels best suited for your students.

To determine a student's initial level and goal using the SE 2.0 placement program, follow these steps:

  1. Log in with your teacher password.
  2. Choose the Students tab.
  3. Select the student you want to place, and then click Place.
  4. Estimate the instructional level the student is currently reading at. You can base this estimate on test results, your own knowledge and experience, or a formal assessment tool, such as Read Naturally's Reading Fluency Benchmark Assessor. Select a story that is at or close to the estimated instructional level of the student.
  5. Click Next. The story you selected opens.
  6. If desired, click the Reading Guide icon to turn on the reading guide to help the student follow along.
  7. When the student is ready to start reading, have him or her click Start.
  8. As the student reads, listen and silently count the number of errors he or she makes.

  9. When the bell sounds, click on the last word the student read.
  10. Enter the number of words the student missed, and then click Next. The placement program analyzes the results and either recommends a level and goal or recommends that you test the student at a higher or lower level.
  11. Depending upon the situation, take one of the following actions:
If the placement program recommends a level and goal...

Click OK if you want to accept the recommendation.

If the placement program recommends testing the student at another level...

Click New Story to test the student with another story, and then repeat the process.

Continue to test the student at additional levels until the placement program recommends a level and goal.

If you think you have enough information to place the student on your own without a recommendation...
  1. Click Change.
  2. Enter the level and goal in the student options.
  3. Click Save.
