Word Warm-ups 2 Helps Students Develop
Phonics Skills with Two-Syllable Words
Since the Word Warm-ups phonics program was launched two years ago, students have benefited from this supplemental phonics program as a way to develop mastery in decoding one-syllable words through quick, timed 10-minute exercises.
But customers have expressed a need for students to continue their phonics development with words of more than one syllable.
Read Naturally is addressing that need with Word Warm-ups 2, a new program that applies the same strategy as the original Word Warm-ups program but with a focus on two-syllable words.
New in Word Warm-ups 2 are sections on compound words, two-syllable word patterns, and simple prefixes and suffixes. The strategy and the activities in Word Warm-ups 2 are the same as those in the successful Word Warm-ups 1 program:
- An introductory activity that increases phonemic awareness and provides an overview of the featured syllable pattern.
- Practice exercises that reinforce the sound or syllable pattern and provide timed, independent practice of words with the pattern until they become automatic for the student.
- A review exercise that reviews the patterns taught in the section and provides additional timed practice.
- A nonfiction passage that promotes application of the pattern taught in the section.
- A challenge exercise that presents new words with the same pattern taught in that section, so students can apply what they have learned.
Word Warm-ups 2 is the logical next step for students who have completed the first Word Warm-ups program. However, some students may have sufficient phonics skills to start with Word Warm-ups 2 — even if they have not used the first program. An assessment included in Word Warm-ups 2 will guide you in determining which of the programs is an appropriate placement for individual students.
Word Warm-ups 2 will be available in late spring 2008 and will be available at the same price as the original Word Warm-ups program, $149.
