Multisyllabic Edition of Word Warm-ups
Phonics Program Released
Read Naturally recently released Word Warm-ups 3, a new edition of our phonics and decoding program focusing on multisyllabic words.
Word Warm-ups helps students develop mastery in decoding words through quick, timed exercises. Word Warm-ups 1 focuses on decoding one-syllable words, and Word Warm-ups 2 focuses on two- and three-syllable word patterns.
It may be appropriate for many students to progress through the Word Warm-ups curriculum in order. But some students may have sufficient phonics skills to start with Word Warm-ups 2 or 3 — even if they have not used the previous levels.
The Word Warm-ups assessments will guide you in determining which of the programs is an appropriate placement for individual students. You can download the Word Warm-ups placement assessments from the Word Warm-ups web page.
Word Warm-ups can be used as a 10-minute daily “warm-up” or extended as a 20- to 30-minute intervention to address phonemic awareness and phonics/decoding needs.
The strategy and activities in all three Word Warm-ups programs are the same:
- An introductory activity emphasizes phonemic awareness and provides an overview of the featured sound or syllable pattern.
- Practice exercises reinforce a sound or syllable pattern and provide timed, independent practice of words with the pattern until they become automatic for the student.
- A review exercise reviews the patterns taught in the section and provides additional timed practice.
- A nonfiction passage promotes application of the patterns taught in the section.
- A challenge exercise presents new words with the same patterns taught in the section, so students can apply what they have learned.
