Study Finds Read Naturally to Be a "Strong Intervention" for Reading Fluency

A study comparing different types of instruction for English language learners and English-only students found Read Naturally to be a “strong intervention” for developing oral reading fluency.

According to the study, “The Read Naturally curriculum was very effective with ELL students.”

The results appeared in the Summer 2007 issue of Learning Disability Quarterly, a journal published by the Council for Learning Disabilities.

One focus of the study was to compare the effectiveness of second-tier instruction in a Response to Intervention (RTI) model with more conventional “balanced literacy” instruction.

One of the main findings of the study was that the direct-instruction approach used in the second-tier interventions (which included the Read Naturally fluency program) improved students’ early literacy skills and was highly effective with ELL groups.
