February 12th marks the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, a self-made man who became one of the greatest United States presidents. Born to a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln worked hard to become a learned man. He taught himself to read and would eventually become interested in books about the law, becoming a lawyer in 1836.
Does your school celebrate Lincoln’s birthday? Do you use this day to introduce discussions on the Civil War or slavery? There are many free resources available online to aid in your discussions, including a short biography on the White House website and lesson plans and teacher guides on the National Park Service website.
This post was inspired by stories in both Level 1.5 and Level 3.0 of the Read Naturally Sequenced Series.
