Read Naturally and National Standards:
The Highlights

How does the Read Naturally strategy match up to national standards? The answers are compiled in a report by Dr. Marcia Davidson entitled, Read Naturally, Scientific Research, and Reading First. While the Reading First act concentrates on the necessary elements of a core reading program, Dr. Davidson describes in detail how Reading First also acknowledges the place for supplemental programs and interventions like Read Naturally.

Following is a quick glance at some of what the Reading First act requires in a reading program and how Read Naturally measures up:

  • It must be derived from scientifically-based research that addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Read Naturally is derived from scientifically-based research and includes instructional content that addresses these five components.

  • It must include assessment strategies for diagnosing student needs and for measuring student progress. Read Naturally's strategy has progress monitoring built into it, and we also offer the Reading Fluency Monitor for these purposes.
