Case 10: Third Grade Student, Mathews County, Va.
Donni Stickney, an Instructional Support Teacher in Mathews County, Va., implemented the Read Naturally strategy with a third grade student who was having a lot of trouble reading. When she began working with him, he read very slowly. His first reading was 39 words per minute, and he often lost his place on the page. Donni had the student do a second reading of the same selection, and he improved to 56 words per minute.
Observing that repeated reading seemed to be helping her student,
she began using the Read Naturally program with him. Over three months, her student’s
fluency rate greatly increased. After using the
Read Naturally strategy, the student went from reading
39 words per minute to 68 words per minute on his first reading.
He improved from 56 to 94 words per minute on his second timing,
as shown in the following chart.
